It looks like you will be able to flash the new iXtreme FW for Hitachi-LG GDR-3120L on v78 and even v79 drives via PC soon. The video below shows the new 360 Firmware Toolbox(info) v4.0 currently in development and how it'll allow you to dump and flash a HLG v79 drive directly from PC (so no desoldering of flashchip required). It's expected to be released very soon.

*UPDATE* Apparently this video is misleading and leaked by a beta-tester. You will still need a 3rd party chip to flash a v79 drive. Sorry for the confusion.

Excellent work. Truly love what these guys have done.

I myself though prefer TSOP desoldering and external flashing.
My trusty Willem programmer does the job well.
Must add though, programmers are only needed for people who do lots of flashing or deal with bricked drives

This program serves the general masses very well nearly 100 percent of the time.

cool, I'm sure this will make many 79 owners very happy. just curious....are the people with the other brands still SOL (philips & benQ)?

I have a 78....but its banned...uhg, I miss my live, I wish there was a way to get it unbanned, I'm sure it exists, but only MS knows how to do that. I will likely end up eventually buying another 360....I just dont want to have to spend much more then a c note.

Yea ive gotten my PC to recognize a v79 drive a while back with slax.

cool i cant wait! I just opened my 360 and was getting ready to flash (turns out i have 78fk) so ill just wait till the toolbox comes out, hope its just a few hours

umm...i don't mean to rain on everyone parade but i seem to remember a certain Spanish site way back just after x1.0 came out calming to be releasing a hacked Hitachi fw "soon" and never did, seeing that the computer this was taken on's main language is Spanish makes me wonder if its not a fake, i hope im wroung and its just a quincadence but time will tell.

I would like to know where this video was found.
