What Am I Doing Wrong?
« on: July 21, 2004, 05:34:00 PM »

So I haven't been around in the scene since early November.  I took a trip cross country with my XBox unsecured in a U-Haul and needless to say, it didn't work anymore when I got to my destination.

I figured it out to be the hard drive, as the error code I got pointed to it, and the HDD was making a whirring sound like it was churning something within.

So just recently I bought a new 60Gb HDD.  I put it in my computer, run HDD Preparer, click Zeroing and Only 1st 4096 sectors, then Prepare on the applicable HDD.

I also format a CDRW I had EvoX 1.458 on and burn EvoX 3935 using Craxtion 4.0 to make an ISO from the directory I had extracted it to.  I burn that using Nero and hook up my HDD to my XBox, pop in the CDRW, and boot up.

I see the red X I haven't seen since Fall, and wait.  Then I see Error Code 16 with half the screen (diagonally) skewed (think scrambled PPV channels).

What am I doing wrong?  Should I try a previous version of EvoX?  Should I burn something else to the CDRW?

You got yourself into a clock loop.
Which could be prevented if you used an updated bios. (update asap after hd swapping  wink.gif)

Anyway to fix the clock loop, plug the old hd back in.
Go into the msdashboard and set the clock.
turn off xbox and put the new hd in but without unpluging the xbox power cable.

If you are still confused about hd swapping check the guide in my sig.

I appreciate the quick response but the original HDD is toast, as in I can't access anything but an error screen....

well, what chip do you have?
Do you have a friend with a modded xbox so you can do a hotswap?
Flash with the latest x2 4983.06 to bypass the clock check.

Oops!  I knew I forgot to post that!

I have a Matrix mod.  I would think the Mod is okay since the red X shows up.

And sadly, I have no friends with a modded XBox...

What do you suggest I do?

There's not much to do..
The xbox clock hasn't been set so it tries to boot into msdash
to set it. The problem is that msdash is nowhere to be found.
Your only way outta this would be to flash the chip somehow
or get a new modchip.

Okay so since I need to flash it with a new BIOS, what bios are people using these days (on the original matrix mod)?

try x2 4981, use xbtool to disable the eject fix (for matrix swap mode)

hopefully you have an external programmer with the matrix

if no programmer, do you have any friends with an xbox at all (unmodded)? you can put the matrix in there, unlock ehtir HD, put it in yours, boot, set the clock in the MS dash, update the bios on your matrix, then put the HD back in your friends xbox and lock it

okay, an update:

I used x2 4983 as suggested by Scar at #xbox-help on Efnet.

I put in a new 9-volt battery and put both dip switches on Mode 1 for testing.

After flashing, I put the chip in my xbox, started it up, and shifted it around a bit until my red flashing LED turned green, then I secured it.

With a CDRW disc with EvoX burned on it, I started up again: Error 16.
I removed the CDRW and restarted: Error 16.

Is it something relating to the CDRW?  Maybe I burned it wrong?  It can't still be the chip because, as I said long ago, before I had flashed it, turning my XBox on showed me a red X logo; post-flashing, I got the generic green startup animation to the X logo to Error 16, which research tells me is:
16 - dashboard - Other files to do with dashboard / dashboard settings (specific dashboard error)

So what now?  huh.gif

You could use xboxhdm to replace your msdash so that it is able to get into the clock setting screen.  Just need to get the msdash files and insert them into the xboxhdm directory structure before you create the ISO.

I apologize for my ignorance, but I don't know how what xboxhdm is or how I'd use it to do what you said, nevermind how to get the MSDash files

Hmm... Nope, just tried it, burning an old version of EvoX on the CDRW.

Now why wouldn't it show the exectutor tag when I flashed it with the x2 4983?

Looks like just the standard retail MS boot up, only, the HDD is brand new so it's not pulling anything off it, not to mention the flashed chip and EvoX boot disc...

well the little tag only comes under the x when its located the xbe its gonna load, since its never locating it (hence 16) it wont show

ive had bad luck with x2 bios and clock checks, even though they are supposed to skip the clock check, try evox m7

argh... so it's still the Bios?  Or, rephrased, you mean I gotta undo my XBox and pull that sucker out of there again?
