I have to recommend Lite-On. Their CD burners have quite a following and the LDW-411s I'm currently using is every bit as good as their CD burners. Noise is only an issue if you're planning on watching DVD's on your PC.

my nec1300a does its job just fine...
Its true that you used to need hacked firmware to burn to cheap media.
But new nd1300a drives come with official 1.08 on it witch has a very high compatibility. Also, on the rpc dvd forums, some of the patchers claim that the burn quality of the nec is actually higher then that of most other burners. thats their opinion tho, i dont have the knowhow to verify that.

However, while i'm able to burn to princo etc succesfully, id rather not use those media as they tend to wear out the xbox's dvd drive faster

When making references to cheaper media we are talking about Princo.  Anyone using anything of lower quality than Princo is just shooting themself in the foot.

NEC 1300A ($100 Shipped) is my recommendation, burned every media I've thrown at it and it supports both formats. Also a little cheaper than the LG and I just think the Sony drives are ugly. (And Sony makes the PS2 and we all know how well they hold up). Just my 2 cents

Yeah, Princo certainly isn't the greatest but there are some Generic ones that are even worse.

What do people think of the Pioneer AO5? Im getting one, just wondering what your thoughts are about it smile.gif

It's good, but it's pretty old.  I like the 106 because it's dual format.

i don't like it. bought it and after 2 months the drive was dead so i returned it and it took near a month tog et a new one. this one worked for 2 weeks. returned it again and got another after 1 month. the new one died after 1 month. i just bought a cheap btc dual burner and this drive works and works and works.

Wow, bad luck!  Sounds like my luck whenever I buy something Sony.  dry.gif   I always have to return them 2 times before I get a working one.

Were you shopping at a place that carries refurbished stuff or something?

Yeah, but do a comparison with the number of complaints about the NEC and the number of complaints about the Sony and I think you will realize that the Sony is clearly the more reliable of the two.  BTW I don't see why anyone buys the NEC when you can get the Pioneer 106 for $119 shipped from www.avlogic.com right now or for $123 from the same site and get Reordnow DX software with it.  So for $20 more you go from one of the most problematic DVD Writers to one of the most Reliable writers.  Even Mr.ED said that the two writers he sees the most problems/complaints about on here are the NEC and the Plextor.

I just picked up the Lite-on 411S, and it is horrible.  Nothing but coasters so far.

Maybe I need a firmware fix, or something, because it is nice to have 4x on rewritable media.

Sony and Pioneer are same price at my source... which one should I switch this one out for?

My Lite-On 411s works Fecking Awesome!

With the latest firmware from "liteonit.com" it works beautifully. Burned 10 Data DVD-Rs so Far and not one coaster. 5 Multi-Game DVD-Rs for XBOX and not one coaster.

With the latest firmware, I highly reccomend this drive!

Get the Latest Firmware from: http://www.liteonit....ad-firmware.htm

or the Direct DL Link: http://www.liteonit....11S/DR4FS0F.zip

the 411s is nice, especially if you apply the 811s firmware patch to it so it can copy both + format and -.  do a search if interested to know how...
