I use a Sony DRU 510a. I am extremely pleased with it. I would do with it. You can't go wrong. It is the best burner you can get this year. Computer Shopper said so.

I have a LG Super Multi DVD Writer (GSA-4040B) and it works pretty well for DVD-R backups.

Get the DRU-510A or you can get the OEM version of it which is the DWU-14a and save yourself a hole heap of cash  wink.gif not to mention you can just use the DRU-510a firmware on it obviously as its the same drive, only OEM.

Also you have to think of it like this, would you sooner have support for a dying media type (DVD-RAM) and only 2MB buffer over having an 8MB buffer and no DVD-RAM support? Hell no, and as the LG only has a 2MB buffer, it having RAM support shouldnt be enough to sway you to get it. Get the sony with its 8MB buffer. Much better drive all round.

It's not the ones you mentioned but I have an Optorite drive which goes for $112 shipped in the US (dunno bout Canada) it reads and burns all discs and has no problems making backups for my xbox.

It's also got HD burn that puts 1.4 gigs on a regular CD (very few drives can read those CDs though).  At this price it may not be the BEST drive but it sure does what I need it to and the money I saved buys a lot of DVDs.

Pioneer 106 is like $130~$135US including shipping.

Anything cheaper is only cheaper by like $10 or $20.  Just get the best.

I have a piopneer 106-rd, flashed firmware to 1.07 2x4x 12x ripfirmware.  This thing is flawless.  Like all other opto drives, dont use with nero 6, nero is way to buggy, use nero 5.10

I'd go for the LG, it's the ONLY dvd writer on the market that support correct EFM encoding (or at least it was when I last looked). The Sony certainly doesn't.

QUOTE
However, if you have a Nvida Geforce2 MX 400 you will run into some serious problems. I had to reinstall windows XP and use an older and crappier graphics card driver to make the damn burner work

Well see, thats what you get for using a nVIDIA card. Toss that PSO out and get your self a nice ATI Radeon.

As for the burner... Sony all the way. Solid burner, they came out with DVD±RW so I would go with them. Have one, love it wouldn't trade it for any thing.
