Xbox-OS , but I didn't hear anything from them the last few months.

Their website was http://xos.xb-power.com/ , but it went down with the xport website (same host). They released a few betas.

That's possible ... I have no idea who coded Xbox-OS.

You could also consider XBMP as a dashboard.

Hey well there is our project XdashOs Whic We are trying 2 make it look Exactly like the M$  dash but with The ability 2 flash Your Bios & what ever else is stated on our site. We are at the state of loking for coders to start coding this dash. I got afew emails from New devs & even Devs from Other projects that want 2 start coding But we need more if you want to help Contact me Either on pm using these forum, On our forums on our site or on our chat room on efnet #xboxopensource.

nexgen is already doing that.

and no , neXgen is not dead ... they just don't make public releases for now.

Much like anything, that is purely based on opinion.
Since there are multiple that get the job done, just use what you like.
