Sony retracts 1080i fix statement

From biz.gamedaily.com:

Sony has contacted us to let us know that they may have spoken a bit prematurely. SCEA's Dave Karraker, Sr. Director, Corporate Communications, informed GameDaily BIZ that they currently cannot confirm that this 1080i issue will be resolved via a firmware patch. The official line is now that they are "looking into the issue and haven't stated any actions that will be taken regarding it."

Very few TV's support 1080p.
Also, very few older TV's support 720p, but they usually support 1080i.
Ps3 doesn't support 1080i.

What happens if you have a older TV? You get to play at ps2 resolution, 480p (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)
How's that for next gen?

So after all the bragging they've been doing on 1080p, which appeals to a few small percent of ps3 owners, they've screwed the majority by forcing them to play at 480p.

Haha.

Thats bad.

This translates into: damn, glad I didn't buy a launch PS3.

For those not in the know, some high def TV's don't do ALL high def resolutions which are:
480i/p
720i/p
and 1080i/p

the ideal situation is that a TV will do all of those resolutions but then there are some TV's that skip 720i/p and show only the highest resolution which is 1080i/p.

Most ps3 games are rendered in 720i/p but if you have a tv that skips 720i/p the damn system will not upscale it to 1080i/p instead it will DOWNSCALE it to standard 480i/p. Which is what regular TV's use. Bad. Very very bad.

No no no. That is not it. PS3 supports 1080i, its just that it can't upscale 720p games to 1080i, and instead downscales all the way to 480p which is a regular definition for a DVD quality movie.

The thing about the Xbox 360 is that it upscales everything, never downscaling. Even if the game can only run at 480p, it'll upscale it to whatever resolution you have your TV set to. If its 1080i, it'll output 1080i. Simple as that.

Even some not so ancient HDTVs like mine that do display 720p and 1080i will get crappy looking games at 720p.   My Toshiba does a poor job displaying 720p for some reason but 480p and 1080i are decent enough.

This is something that i am confused about. Does the PS3 actually downscale the game or does it render at 480P instead? I was under the impression that the PS3 didnt have an internal scaler. Although even major websites such as ign use the word downscale.

The sony diplays what it renders.  This is why it cannot magically scale a 720p (1280x720 rez) game into a 1080i one (1920x1080 rez) as the performance hit to render that resolution would be to dramatic...i.e. poor framerate.  So if the tv cannot do 720p, it will drop back to 480p (720x480 rez). This I imagine would result in a comparitively poor picture i.e The same resolution as the old hardware.

The Xbox360 can render at one resolution and output in a nother.  So for most intensive purposes - it renders internally at 720p and will for no performance penalty display it at 1080i thanks to the scaler hardware.

if it never downscales and all games are 720p how does it still manage to do 480p/i ? and if it does ever do a 1080p game i very much doubt it wont downscale to 720p, or over 90% of its users will be unable to enjoy it.

I cant believe Sony can say that they "are the next generation" supporting true HD if they arnt supporting legacy HD (which is still HD). Talk abot screw the early adopters.

Am I right to assume this issue is all caused by Sony's assumption that all PS3 games would be developed in 1080P?

That would probably be a fair assumption.

And sony is still supporting all resolutions, its just that some games don't.

this story is interesting since I was wondering how they were gonna fix this. Its more of a hardware issue than a software one. The 360 1080p thing was more software than anything else, the scaler chip was just "locked" from outputting 1080p.They just had to unlock it.

It'll be interesting to see what sony does to fix this. If they do actually fix it...

I'm just glad that I have a 1080p LCD, and that our 1080i CRT accepts 720p.  Late adoption of the HDTV standard rocks. happy.gif
