Sony retracts 1080i fix statement

I feel sorry for the uneducated. Lot's of people are going to have 480p setups via composite cables or non compliant HDTV's.

Problem is Sony has pushed 1080p all games (originally dual 1080p even) and now I'm going to get DVD quality picture even tho I'm using a Blu-Ray drive and Blu-Ray discs.

To be honest it makes it look like a Blu-Ray issue in general. I know movies don't suffer this problem but to Joe Consumer they're going to read an article about how this new HDTV they just got on black friday won't do anything better than DVD on their systems.

While Blu-Ray movies don't suffer from this the average consumer is going to be confused. They're going to ask the salesperson if the Xbox 360 has this problem as well and the answer is going to be no.

Congrats, one more sale for Microsoft all because Sony has overpromised and under-delivered

the ps3 surely cant render at different sizes for each output.

so you choose your screen size, and thus choose your framerate?

thats freakin awesome!

480p everytime!, better than shocking framerates at 1080p or whatever!

Yep, I'd be screwed as i got a SONY KV-34XBR800 that only supports 1080i but luckily i have a HD Scaler that accepts the 720p signal and converts to 1080i; AFAIK the PS3 will see that my TV supports a 1080x signal, but doesnt know to send a 720p signal and instead sends a 1080p instead, and all i get is a black screen on the tv thru HDMI.

I find it very weird that 1080i is considered a lower resolution then 720p in the setup menu for the PS3, i could not figure out my after telling the PS3 to run at 1080i thru my scaler, that Resistance looked like crap, i mean duke nuken pixelation.... of course it was the down scalling the game to 480p so there was lost of jaggies that i saw.

BTW, I called Sony support about this earlier today, what a mistake, newbie assisted and they knew nothing about this or my wireless  connectivity issue; soon as i heard ".... now goto your modem and disconnect the power...." i should have hung up (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) .

Do you have a link, that would be sweet and would like to read more about it, not being sarcastic either.

Ok im a little lost.  I have a Sony 46 inch HDTV which displays 480i,480p,720p,1080i.  I have a HDMI input, 2 component inputs, and composite and svideo hookups.  I am wondering what the problem is.  I will be able to play playstation 3 games on my TV through component cables at 1080i, correct?  I will not be using a HDMI input for the simple fact basically why use it when it is mainly for 1080p and my tv doesnt do that?  any advice?

Games that say 720p support only on the box will only play at 720p. If your set your dash to auto detect resolution you should be fine after this latest update. People who have tv's that only support 1080i and 480i/p are the ones that are really effected.

HDMI is not just for 1080p, it is an all digital connection and if you have one you should use it. Component will still look great but if and when sony allows upconversion of standard dvds you will not be able to do that over component.

The Xbox 360 has a built in scaler chip so if you set your dash to 1080i it will scale all content to that resolution.

The PS3 does not have an internal scaler chip, so if the game says 720p supported and nothing else than that is all the PS3 will output the game in. Let’s say you have a game that is 720p support only and you manually disable 720p in the ps3 dash, the PS3 will than downscale the game into 480p.

The reason why a lot of people including me are pissed that the ps3 can't scale games is because if you own a TV that only does 1080i and 480i/p and you have a ps3 game that only does 720p  (like resistance fall of man) you get craptacular 480p.

Ok so if a game is 720p, It will play at 720p on my tv even though I have a 1080i?  and for blue ray, what resolution can i watch that at? 1080i?

Ok here goes,

If you have a tv that does 1080i, 720p, and 480i/p (like you) and you have your PS3 set to accept all those inputs it goes as follows,

Game says 720p on box only, game plays at 720p only
Game says 720p, 1080i, you get 1080i
Blue ray you get 1080i.

That is the best i can explain it
