I have a new Western Digital 80gb 7200rpm drive in my box and haven't had any problems yet due to overheating. Played it for about 3 hours yesterday then left it on overnight to FTP stuff to the drive, no problems this morning either.

Remember, YMMV, but mine seems to be OK.

why would a 7200 rpm overheat? would it overheat in a pc?

I was wondering who has all used a 7200 rpm HDD as there replacement. Have you had any overheating problems or any other mishaps. Thanks

Diamond Max Plus 60 7200 RPM 40 GB HDD... and keep in mind, this was computer only and was never put in the xbox. another thing, it died a few days ago so I can no longer take any temperature readings on it.

ah the age old debate. well most all say there is no noticable speed difference. some say that the 7200 can overheat, but noone really knows for sure. i would say, solely becuase of the price difference, to go for the 5400. i would also recommend going for 120 instead of 80, but thats just my opinion. remember that in terms of hd space its always better to have more then no enough.

Not at all, i have a 60GiG seagate 7200rpm myself but it all depends on the model...
some 7200rpm models do run verry hot.
Remember that the hdd is on top of the cpu so you have 2 heat sources close to eachother.

overheating cpu= crashing
overheating hd= dataloss

that's why I said it was a waste. he shoulda put it in his pc. the 8mb cache is useless in the xbox

it's awesome in the PC however.. and i couldn't get it.. gah...

I'll trade that 8mb cache 120 gb for my 120 gb =)
