Best Dv Editing Config
« on: August 20, 2004, 06:28:00 AM »

I'm going to be working on editing some film from DV tape, transferred onto PC, and I'm considering buying a new, clean PC to do it.  I have it pretty much all set up, but I am unsure which type of graphics card would suit it best, a gaming class card like an  ATi RADEON or a professional class card like a FireGL.  I know it makes a huge difference for gaming and rendering, but is video editing affected as well?  Thanks in advance.

Not one bit man. The big three things you need to worry about when it comes to video editing is:

1) Memory ( the more the better, 2 gigs is nice for AV work )

2) CPU ( This determines how fast your edits are completed )

3) Hard drive ( when you are dealing with large files, fast hard drives cutt the access times down alot )

Those are the only things you need to worry about when it comes to 2D video editing.

All right, thanks.  I figured memory speed and quantity would come up huge, should SATA drives do the trick though for HDD, or should I bite the bullet and get a SCSI drive?

Well if you get a workstation motherboard that supports PCI-X I would skip SCSI and go with a SATA RAID 5 setup. I have set them up from 3-8 drives using a SATA RAID controller and it is a thing of beauty.

Here are some benchmark:
http://www.tomshardw...scaling-03.html

The benchmark there used a software controller card which uses CPU time so I would go with a true hardware RAID controller card. They cost more but the don't use as much CPU power.

Just do some research into what you can afford and get the best your wallet you let you.

Are there any quality PCIx RAID controllers on the market yet, though?

Also, make sure to keep your video files completely separate (different HDs) from any of your other stuff.. you want dedicated HDs for video capture/editing.

It may be worth it to invest in a hardware MPEG2 encoder/decoder:

Of course, that's not the only one on the market.. Just trying to give you a good starting point.

DOH

I don't know how I left that one out.

So that's noticably better than a software encoding solution, enough to justify the added expense?

Well that all depends on what you mean by "quality".

I used this controller for the workstation I built that had the RAID 5 setup. It is a true hardware controller instead of a software controller.

Man that thing was nice. Once I buy M$ I will get me one of those for my home.

Thats a good questions. I have not done allot of research on Mpeg encoder cards. I will try to do that this weekend and get back to you on Monday.

P.S. Just out of curiosity, what is your price limit on this system?

I don't really have a limit financially, but I don't want to buy anything unreasonable for the purpose of this machine.
