360 From Ebay, What Is This On Mb

Not sure what the hell that is but the reason your new drive does not play anything but DVD's is because you do not have the proper drive key for that console. It is likely that the drive that is came with did not have the proper drive key.

It has to be the correct key cause I flashed a different drive with it and it played games just fine.  I was thinking the same thing at first cause the warranty sticker on the drive had been broken.

OK you are right. I read the last part where you said

Also, can the drive be fixed to play more than just dvds?

Yes it likely only needs a new laser.

WTF, that's a large resistor. Heavy duty ceramic type. 5W 12ohm if I'm reading it correctly. Why teh hell is that in there anyway? Is it attached to anything?

The side you can see is attached to a 12v source I think. Where the other end is going I have no clue. Maybe the fans?

I have seen many things over the years with the 360 but never anything like that. It does not appear to be going to the fans so its got me stumped.

If its attached to the 12V line to power of the fans, the only I can think of is the resistor is allowing power to the fans in a linear fashion going from low to high, without spiking the fans to full power all the way during start up. Its a thought.

It might have the 12V fan mod, if that's the case. Albeit a funky one.

Yep - it's going to one of the volt regulators for the fans - pretty conveluted way of doing it though....

Laser swaps easy - open up drive, remove laser. Buy new laser unit, take off anti-static solder (easy to do with an iron), pop new laser back in smile.gif

I solved the update problem.  I just need the fan to stop running after its turned off.  I think its not shutting completely off while the fan is running.
