1080i And 1080p

Depends on what type of display you have.  CRT, yes.  LCD, no if it has a good de-interlacer.

Depends on what type of rear projection.  You won't find a 1080P CRT.  1080P sets are available in flat panel LCD and Plasma (very few models), and rear projection in DLP and LCOS (JVC HD-ILA, Sony SXRD).  Generally speaking, there isn't much benefit to going with a 1080p set unless you're choosing a large screen size and sit close enough for your eyes to see the extra detail 1080 offers over 720.  Here is some info on 1080P.  My advice is, if you're in the market for a large screen rear projection then 1080P is a no-brainer.  There are many models available and the prices are reasonable.  You're going to pay more of a premium to get a flat panel at this resolution.  If CRT is what you're looking at then 1080i is the highest you'll see unless you're looking at PC monitors.

I have always been skeptical about how much of a difference between 720p and 1080p, as 720p has always looked more than great for me.  At CES Panasonic had a comparison set up at their booth:

You can see that there is definetly a difference, and that would probably be more prevalent in video games.  If I was shopping for a new TV today, I would absolutely make sure that it supported HDMI and 1080p.  If you are have a 720p supporting system and you are wondering whether its worth it to upgrade right now, that is debateable and I would probably stick with my 720p for now.

I went from a 55" Mits 1080i CRT w/component to a 61" Samsung DLP 1080p w/VGA and it is a very noticeable difference with Gears of War......

My SXRD XBR is a first gen of it's type. It upconverts 1080i signal to 1080p, but does not accept 1080p through any means. Discovery Channel HD Theater looks better than real life, I kid not. I think the 1080p upconvert has a lot to do with that. I think also that should it you place a newer model next to it, one that accepts 1080p and of course gave that TV signal at that resolution, that it wouldn't look any better. Side by side, Blu-Ray for example I bet would look as good as any TV out there.

In closing I think if your TV displays a 1080p picture, whether it can get a 1080p signal or not, you are doing good.
