Secondly the disk drive only makes this noise during spindown which is why it concerns me. I'm wondering if other peoples drives do the same? My bro's Hitachi drive doesn't do it but thats a different make.

i have a samsung and so do 90%of all xboxes ive seen...every single one does this...it is most likely because of a weaker style magnet on the motor probably their retarded idea of why they all had problems on the original xboxes and were too stupid to realize that it was the rubberband should have been made smaller .just cause using tape to weaken the old xbox samsung magnets worked it was not the problem... samsung still has problems with drives not opening properly, wich is more prominent in a vertical xbox than a horizontal one.. thankfully ive never had a problem with that in my samsung
