I'm wanting to do the same thing, but mainly because my DVD drive is shot and the network connection is not an option right now, and I have a 3.5" USB drive (30GB) i remember when i ran DSL on my laptop I was able to do that, but on the XBOX i have problems even booting with this drive in...probably the hardware limitation. seems like most posts here on the subject dont date past October of last year though.

Still using xdsl here.
all I can say is I'm playing files off a usb flash drive, and a sd card reader. I'm not sure about usb hard drives. some things will mount and some wont. If you need a driver for it in windows, then you can try to use wine to run the driver.

I've heard only that USB I/O only work currently in the latest xdsl version. I may be wrong, but I'll use my friends USB later today and tell you how it is.
