Xbox Version 1.4.  Focus Video Encoder Chip.  Winbond TSOP chip.

After failed chip install by Friend 1:

No visible damage, just a straight-up FRAG with or without chip installed.

After motherboard damage by Friend 2:

The Top TSOP write enable solder pads (to the left of R7D10) are burned to where there is no metal left.  Surface mount resistor R7D9 is completely gone, must have been broken off.

The first thing I did when I got the motherboard was inspect it to see what I was up against.

Since the motherboard was FRAGging even with no chip, I quickly assumed it may be the d0 trace.  It looked good, but from previous experience, FRAG on no-chip usually meant the d0 trace.  I checked continuity with a multimeter on all possible d0 locations.  Top, Bottom, Bottom near C6R5.  Every possible combination that I tried, I got a signal, meaning the traces were good and the d0 was connected. I soldered a wire between two d0 locations just in case it may be that trace.

Next, I used another motherboard to test the resistance value of the R7D9 that was missing on the FRAGging motherboard.  Found it to be 10Kohms.  Installed a 10Kohm resistor into the FRAGging motherboard in the R7D9 location.  Tests showed a good connection.

Then, I took a close look at the TSOP write-enable solder spots.  The damage to these two solder pads were surprisingly contained.  No other visible damage had been done to anything nearby, it was just those two points.  One part of me said this shouldn't matter, as they weren't even connected in the first place (he was trying to connect the two points for TSOP write access).  Just to make sure, I soldered a wire from a trace to the bottom point to a trace going to the top point.  This would enable TSOP write access ( Not necessary, but I thought it might help).

After testing the d0, replacing the resistor, and repairing the TSOP write-enable, I figured it was time for real testing.

Results:

Xbox is still FRAGging with no chip installed.  Not a normal FRAG, though.  A normal FRAG (if I'm not mistaken) would go something like this:

Power on, Solid Green LED for a second

Off

Power back on, Solid Green LED for a second

Off

Power back on, Flashing Red and Green LEDs

This FRAG was different because the second power on attempt would produce a FLASHING green led for a second before powering off.

Not sure if that will help anybody, but just stating an observation

Ok, one more try!

Installed an Xecuter 2.6 modchip that was confirmed working in another Xbox and freshly reprogrammed for X2 5035 v_old.

Chip installation produces the same exact results, nothing is different.

Below is a picture for reference when I'm telling you about all these locations on the board.
THIS IS NOT THE BROKEN MOTHERBOARD - I should have pictures up soon.

Anybody want to look at those LPC values and tell me if they're close enough?

they dont look to bad but 10% is about right for resistance tolerances
