As I mod more Xboxes I'll make a note of the last 5 digits and what's inside (DVD/HDD/PCB), see if a pattern emerges.

So far I've found:-
21103 = Thomson/Western Digital/1.0
23705 = Philips/Seagate/1.1
24005 = Samsung/Seagate/1.1
24105 = Samsung/Seagate/1.1
24205 = Samsung/Seagate/1.1
30705 = Philips/Seagate/1.2

There's a post awaiting addition to the FAQ, but in the meantime, here's what I've found:-

On PAL Xboxes, the guts of the unit can be determined from the 8th and 9th digits of the serial number, in other words the first 2 digits of the 5-digit section (that's right, no need to open the box!)

Codes found so far are:-
21 - Thomson DVD, Western Digital HD, 1.0 PCB
23 - Philips DVD, Seagate HD, 1.1 PCB
24 - Samsung DVD, Seagate HD, 1.1 PCB
30 - Philips DVD, Seagate HD, 1.2 PCB

More codes to come as I come across them!

sorry if i sound ignorant im new to this but what does it matter what type of dvd-rom drive is in it.

For mods, you need to boot off of the cd and the samsung has been confirmed to read cd-rs fine.  Phillips has some trouble and I've only heard bad news about the Thomson.

For those other two drives you'll have to actually make a DVD-r for the xbox to see it.

Not entirely true, you could do the PC DVD swap trick, or burn a CD-RW.   beerchug.gif

why would the xbox company (MS) change the companies around that many times the xbox hasn't even been out for 2 years yet.

Because Samsung Drives cost less. It's all about the quotes for the parts. I mean PS2 have changed parts 7 times to lessen the cost.

Same last five digits as me, but I have a WD HDD, so I don't think the HDD is relevant.

There is no way of telling what kind of drive your XBOX has without at least opening the DVD tray.  If you guys want to waste your time be my guest. Your best chances of getting one are XBOXs manufactered between September 2002-Jauary 2003. They are all put in at random. Good Luck!!!

Shit.  Might be worth looking at the first three then , or perhaps all 5?

If you go for a 24 model, try a lower number, like a 240, 241, 242 or 243.  The ones in this range that I've come across are all Samsung/Seagate/1.1 machines.

And if the replacement doesn't have a Sammy? What a ferocious cycle. I hope someone I know doesn't get one of your discarded xboxes  dry.gif

BTW, philips drives are good too. I have a philips in one and a samsung in the other. Both actually read everything about the same... You should have at least tested the philips you received...  wink.gif
