What Hdd Shoudl I Buy?
« on: April 17, 2003, 04:54:00 PM »

i've heard mixed responses about which HDD is the better choice...

7200RPM vs 5400RPM
??????

7200 loads about 3 seconds faster than 5400 but how much noisier is it?  have any of you guys done tests on this stuff?

i will be buying a Western Digital Brand as that is higher quality apparently.
never bought a HDD before..  and it s alot of money, i want to make the right choice.

here in Canada i found a an 80 GIGger 7200 for $140 CAN = $96.4977 USD
and also a 120 GIGER 7200 for $200 CAN = $137.869 USD

both at future shop.
do these prices sound reasonable?

thnx peeps.

the xbox does not support 7200rpm. a 7200 rpm hdd will work fine infact im using a 7200 80 gig wd
but it is better to use a 5200 for 4 reasons
1)cooler tempurature
2)less sound
3)cheaper
4)longer life
the xbox cannot take advantage of the 7200rpm drive

I never knew hard drives had lives, I have a crappy 2 gb hard drive from a long time ago and it still works fine, however it usually sits in a counter.

edit: however that depends, if you get a fucked up hard drive which always makes wierd noizes and screeching sounds then it probably won't last long like my old 15 gb hard drive which almost broke. I was lucky enough to make a backup before that happened. Now it sits along with 2 other hard drives in a counter.

Now that's just funny.

The XBOX will work with any 5400 or 7200 RPM drive. IDE or ATA. I heard someone say the XBOX can not use an ATA drive, which we all know is not true.

It's getting hard to find 5400 RPM drives, and when you do, they are not much less than 7200 RPM drive.  Sure, the 7200 may generate just a bit more heat, but it's not always the case and I've read nothing that states for a fact this is bad.

It seems to me that Maxtor drives have a better chance at locking, but this will only concern those that want to play XBOX live.

I went for a good ole 5400 rpm 120gb drive... I don't care about XboxLive and neither should anyone modding. You just play on gamespy or xbconnect like the rest of us freaks that hate M$. As for heat I know guys that run 7200 without a hitch but you may want to look into ensuring good ventilation AROUND your box. Like, don't stick it in an entertainment center with an eclosed shelf and a glass door shut. Keep in the open air and you'll have no probs with a 7200. If you overheat you'll know it. Just do something different and you'll be fine.

You may want to do some research on the WD drives.  I hear some lock, and some don't.  Again, this only matters if you want to use XBOX live.  Do a search and you'll turn up many posts, some very detailed with which drives people have had the best success with.

I would get a Maxtor if I were you actually.   They are definitely according to waht I have read more guaranteed to lock without problems.

And to the guy who said modder shouldn't care about xbox live.  What are you talking about.  I use xbox live everyday with my 120GB locked drive.
