I tried leaving the menu   Msdash,@3 but it did not work.

Try this in your Menu.ini file at the top:

MSDashBoard = "c:\msxboxdash.xbe"

Of course, make sure to rename your origional dashboard from "xboxdash.xbe" to "msxboxdash.xbe". You should keep the file in its origional location as well (which will correspond to c":\")

On a small network you normally need to manually set up each new PC you add to it. This involves many settings which have to be "just right" for everything to work. It's VERY easy to make mistakes too.

I know I've set up a network before and crossed SOME bridges.
QUOTE
Imagine the mess on a larger LAN with a hundred systems or more!

DHCP sets up your TCP/IP component of your LAN automatically.

During bootup, your devices look for a DHCP server and ask it how they should configure themselves. (this includes your Xbox and printers BTW).

If they find one, they do what the DHCP servers says.

This means that you can quickly and easily configure an entire network with a DHCP server. it also keeps tracks of which addresses are used, which DNS server to use, etc.

As each machine is booted it "learns" what it needs to know.

With a sharing device, each machine "learns" what it needs to know to also get internet access via a special type of built in firewall.

This "firewall" or NAT device (not quite the same things) permit multiple computers or devices to SHARE one connection to your ISP, much like a router but with a BIG important distinction.

With a router, each PC needs an IP address given to it by your ISP.

With a NAT device, only ONE IP is needed. The NAT device basically receives packets destined for the internet. It "unpacks" each packet from a computer, looks at where it is going, repackages with it's own IP and sends it on it's way.

When the reply comes back it does the opposite.

This means that as far as the ISP is concerned you merely have ONE, albeit very busy machine connected to your cable modem.

To sweeten the pot, your machines are then automatically "hidden" behind the NAT device by this technique. No one can for the most part, poke around on your machines.

----

Games use relatively low LAN bandwidth. Even  a 10baseT lan provides more game bandwidth than you would ever need.

Given todays prices, a 100baseT combination "sharing" device is a bargain and a half, often with wireless thrown in.

You can even wirelessly connect your Xbox too. It works fine for me!

Thanks for that, you guys are so helpful!

So would I need a router for broadband connection, and then a switch for the network?

Doesn't matter, I've sorted it.  I'm gonna get one of these now and one of these later biggrin.gif Thanx tho guys, u rose again to the occasion.

If you plan to share your broadband connection with all the devices on the network (I'm assuming this is one of your goals), then I would stay away from the first one (FS608). This is a switch, plain and simple. You would still have to connect the broadband modem to a computer, then to which is connected to the network. This will utilize more resources (such as having to setup NAT in windows to share the connection)

Instead, go first with the second device (RP614). This is a router with buit in DHCP, so it should allow you to connect the broadband modem directly to the device. Then, the device will act as the "traffic cop", and allow all computers on the network to access the internet. Additionally, this means you have a peice of hardware dedicated to sharing you internet connection, rather then having to use a computer.

Much more reliable, easier, and safer in the longrun. If that device is to much, go with similar products from either D-Link or Linksys. I personally use the Linksys BEFW11S4 -- if you don;t need wireless, the BEFSR41 is the same thing without the wireless.

So if you select "MSDashboard" from the Evolution-X menu are you dropping to the M-i-c-r-o-s-o-f-t dashboard?

If not then the msxboxdash.xbe file you have is -NOT- the MS dashboard, it's something else.

If true, restore it from a backup.

Yes when I select MS dashboard from the evox menu it takes me to the original dashboard.  But when I press eject to boot,  it gives me error 13.  Could it be  point 9 or10 on the back of the mother board?

You have a Matrix type chip then.

When you press the Eject button the Xbox is reverting back to the MS BIOS, which is expecting to see a MS Dashboard. Instead you have Evolution-X in place.

You need to change the switches so this does not happen.

                                    Refresh my memory on this...

It's supposed to boot to EvolutionX with the ybox bios so AFAIK that is working ok.

To get to the old MSDash select it from the menu.

Is this not working now?
