This may be a stupid question but could I just unplug my cable modem and hook the xbox up or do I need to buy a router?

Eh, not quite.

Hubs are relatively passive devices with no other capabilities.

For this to work your ISP must support multiple connected devices AND doling out IP's via DHCP.

An easier way is to you a CABLE/DSL router with NAT, Firewall & DHCP capabilities built in. Not all are compatible with the Xbox though...

In this case you appear to have only one "device" connected to the cable modem/DSL Modem. The connection is shared by all of the devices hooked to the router.

One step up from this is a wireless AP with a built in router & switch.

This permits the above and adds support for wireless connections.

You can then get an ad-hoc wireless device for your Xbox and put it anywhere in the house without any cables, while still be hooked up to the internet/XBLive.

Internet to comp., comp to switch, switch to xbox and other comps.

Hopefully a 1gbit switch (but jesus the prices!!!)

Two ethernet cards

Would this work?

Oh and also, would i need a special broadband hub or isnt there such a thing?

Well either you are kidding or if you don't know...

Gigabit switches would do you no good with relatively slow Xbox connection speeds so why bother?

Look at one of these:

http://www.dlink.com...wireless/di764/

That's merely a hub with an uplink port.

If you have to ask the question you don't have a router or modem sharing setup.

I got one of those wireless all in one D-links. Works just great with the Xbox.

One Xbox is directly connected, and two are wireless.

MS said that wireless was too slow... piffle.

This is a new "ad hoc" device that works perfectly for the Xbox.
It's perfectly made for consoles!

I'm using two of these, reconfigured as bridges

b cos then i can have very fast network gaming, if it ever needs to use that much bandwidth
