I'm a total newbie myself, so I can't offer help, but I too have had the Thing not boot.  I tried that and Buffy thus far.

Buffy boots fine, the Thing does not (same error you get).
I'm wondering if it's because one's on CD...

Btw the release filename was PX-THING.
I'm using the enigmah 29-wire XBox cooker.

People have been having problems with the Thing on all types of mods. Its not your mod, i believe its either a bad burn or a bad image. I know Grand theft auto for ps2 was really picky with certain media and how fast you burn it.
