The onl yreason a hrd drive need to be lockable, is if you plan on using the retail kernal, (default Xbox dash) to play on Xbox live. I have never locked a single hard drive I own, because if the Xbox dies and your hard drive is locked, now you are left with a 300gb paper weight.

I have not encountered an Wester Digital, Segate, or Maxtor drives that did not work in an Xbox console. (provided they are standard IDE interface drives) I have had issues with certain Hatachi, and IBM drives.

its not that the HDDs are compatible or not. its if they lock. any HDD will work but if you want to play live or use the original MS dash, you will need a HDD that locks.
