Well, I was able to fix the problem.  It turns out that after of year of use, the solder connection for pin no. 9 went bad.  When I checked the voltage on that pin it was 0V instead of 3.3V.  A quick touchup of the connection and all was good.  I hope this helps some one else who ends up in my shoes.  Thanks for the great website guys.
