1mb Chameleon Modchip With Solderless Adaptor
« Reply #1 on: August 07, 2003, 12:50:00 PM »

I'd love to tell you my troubles if you feel like answering:

Plain and simple.
Received Chameleon with Solderless Adapter.
Flashed bank 0 with Xecuter 4977, flashed fine, verified.
I have 1.1 Xbox, w/holes.
I popped the adapter in, screwed it down, spring wire
was in d0 correctly.
Popper chip on adapter, booted up, still boots to MS Dash.
Tried flashing oher banks with same bios, nothing. Bios
is definitely good. Same one I use in my 1.0 machine with a Matrix.
Also tried booting to Chromwell, and nothing, still MS Dash.
Light on chip never comes on, only flickers when I nudge the chip.

Does this adapter jsut flat out not work? The chip flashed fine and there's not
really any way to put the adapter in wrong... Any idea?

if it flickers when moving it arround it should work ok.

Try aligning until it works. if you realy cant get it. try filling the lpc holes with solder.

Or just solder the bugger with pinheaders.

Heh. You're in the same boat a lot of others are in. The so-called "solderless adapter" is an oxymoron if I ever heard one. I got one last week and spent and hour jiggling and turing the damn thing and the blue light only winked on once. The only sure-fire way I've heard to get it to work is to fill your LPC points with solder; otherwise the pogo pins won't make contact with them.  I'd recommend just breaking down and having someone solder it for you.

The backside D0 point is probably easier to solder than the header pin itself as it already has a nice solder pad in place and ready to receive you pre-tinned wire. Just hold the wire vertically, gently apply some head to the wire just abve the point (do not heat the DO point itself) and in about .5 seconds you will be greeted with a freshly soldered, firmly attached D0 point.  (always do the backside D0 point last in any install. And stay away from the topside point if you're new to soldering)

For the header pin itself, put it in place, hold it down with electrical tape from the top of the board, and solder. Apply heat to the tip of the header pin legs and then feed solder slowly onto the lower portion of the pin sticking up through the board. Again, you do not need to touch the board with the iron. If you do this correctly you will see solder flowing down into the LPC hole and filling it. Make sure you dont add too much as you dont want to have to clean up a mess later with solder wick.

Make sure you use a 15W iron and keep the iron away from the board itself.
