If he carefully disassembled the xbox (when peeling the sticker and pads he used a blow dryer), and if he carefully puts it back together (without modding it), he should be able to exchange it under the warrenty (i've returned things i've disassembled up before).

just don't MOD IT!

Well i got the extended warrenty and because i got a broken xbox from someone. so i took out the motherboard and but it into the xbox that had the warrenty... So i had to get around the electronic boutic girl. so i took my sister and told her to exchange it for me... and she said that at first they didnt want to but then the guy started to flart with her, she said it was a mistake that she tried to open the xbox to fix it.... but i now own 2 xbox's =)

You could just buy a new xbox form Walmart and do the sticker switch.  Return the broken one to Walmart and they can send it back to MS for a vendor credit.  MS will just refurbish it and send it back out.   This way nobody loses out.  Trust me, Walmart sends thousands of products back that were damaged during shipping.  Your friends Xbox will just be one of the many.
