Normal dvd drives cannot read Xbox orginal games.  That is why if you want to play an original you must plug the xbox drive back in.  

And no, future modchips won't make the xbox drive read media differently, the chip has nothing to do with the ability to read different media all it does is let you run unsigned code.

I tried the master-slave trick , but it didn't work.

You can buy (or make) an IDE switch thought if you want. That makes it easier to switch between the 2 drives.
