Remote Control

I want to buy a remote control for my softmodded Xbox to use in XBMC but I read that with an official Xbox the remote controller locks your region to the receiver. So once you've used a region 1 remote controller you can never switch back to region 2. Are third party remotes also made this way or are they region free? And if so, does this apply to a modded Xbox as well or does this region locking only occur in an unmodded Xbox?
