so why would someone go to the trouble of making that wintv pvr usb device work with an xbox, when you could just plug it into a pc and go from there?  I don't see the need for all the leg work??? sleeping.gif

I don't have my PC in the living room.

I don't have a cable jack on this side of my apartment.

I don't watch TV and/or recordings on my computer.

I don't have surround sound on my computer.

I don't have a big comfy couch as my computer chair.

My lady friend and I can't "watch" a movie/show in this office chair.

My computer isn't as portable as my xbox.

Your Xbox only has USB 1.1 (I wouldn't use this even if the capture device has Hardware MPEG2 encoding capabilities since the USB bus would be a bottleneck).

Your Xbox HDD is only on an ATA33 controller (the other big bottleneck).

You'd need Linux (and a suitable driver for the capture device.

You can buy PC-to-TV devices.

You can buy a sound card for your PC with surround sound for less than the capture device.

You can get a cable splitter and lengths of coax cable. Before you start saying that it'd be unsightly to have the length of cable snaking around the house, you should see just my room with all the Cat6 cable snaking around it.

Just because your room can look like a geek's playground doesn't mean that my house can...

The point is: If it can be done, why not? I mean, seriously. If someone pounds on this enough and comes up with an efficient way to make decent captures on the xbox, what have we lost? Nothing. We have only gained. I might not necessarily need/want a DVR Xbox, but I'm the kind of guy that would spend 3 months making it work. Why? Because that's what I like to do.

If you don't have a use for it, don't post in the thread, eh?

It's always going to cost more than just buying a dedicated PVR though, because they are being manuf. in a lot more volume than any sort of USB capture device you purchase.

I have a friend who just custom built his HTPC.  It's cool and all, but it cost about 3 times as much as a top end Replay PVR and it doesn't really do anything better (well it will play PC games).  In fact, he's had more software issues than you would if you just bought a Replay/TIVO device.

The AV multi conector on Xbox is labeled "Audio Video Input/Output".

Is it possible to use it to record video?

Why is it labeled input if you can't record?

You mean the AVIP? I think that means Audio/Video Interface Port...

I mean the port on the backside of the Xbox, where you conect the Scart Cable to your TV-set.
The text-lable besides it says "Audio Video Input/Output".

How do I use input?
Can I conect an external TV-tuner and use my Xbox to HDD-record a program?
Is this tecnicaly possible?
Have anyone made software to do it, if it is possible?

If not possible, why does the text say "Input" if it's not possible?

You cant, not through the AVIP.

Yes. you can connect a USB TV tuner and use linux to record programmes.

Dont know. There was some talk of MS releasing a hardware/software addon to use the xbox as a TiVo-like device, but the AVIP port has no spare pins for audio & video input (as far as I have seen).

how about an alternative to capturing on the xbox itself... everyone knows you dont want your shiny multifunction xbox stuck using linux at all times cuz you have a show scheduled to record in *looks down at watch* 20 minutes so 'uhh i cant use my xbox rigth now..'

and again, the quality of video due to the xbox's internal components and mainly the use of usb1.1 make most people not want to waste time on this idea...

however... ive found a better way that should work without a hitch...  still using linux running on xbox, however, alot more like how media player/center handles getting video..

www.snapstream.com, basically the software runs on a pc with a tv tuner in it, it uses xml to create the tv guide, and encodes like a norenal pc with a tv tuner would with very nice scheduling features, the only difference and the reason this will work, is because that software and the pc acts effectively as a pvr server... you can run client software on the xbox in linux, or on any other pc on your network, which show the current tv guide for live tv over ethernet, as well as picking what you want the pc to record later on! select what you want recorded, and let the pc do the work... at that point you can also switch to already recorded menu (or use xbmp/c) and playback the stream through your network... very good solution to this 'want', give it a shot and lemme know how it goes for you...

^^ that has already been accomplished with the use of mythtv, xml tv guides etc etc except the server / client is for linux

mythtv xbox isos can be d/led here:
http://bit.blkbk.com/

mythtv everything else can be found here:
http://www.mythtv.org/

once you get it going it works quite well !
