Bottom Case On? Bad.. Bottom Case Off? Good..

I have a weird problem with a PS3.

It works fine and boots up if the guts of the PS3 (Motherboard, PSU, BluRay Drive etc etc) are out of the case.  Completely out of the case and resting on the fan, which I KNOW can't be good for it.

But, when I put the guts into the bottom case, the thing won't boot at all.  It just sits there with a black screen, but the green power LED is on and stable.

I have even tried a different lower case with the same result.

Anyone have any idea why this is happening?
