Well, we didn't have to wait for anyone to crack open their PS3 to check, because Sony has squashed all rumors that the new $399 40GB PlayStation 3 SKU is featuring 65nm chips (shrunk from their 90nm standard). While we'll save you the copy and pasted rough auto translation, Sony essentially said that 65nm is not here yet but that they were working on it for the future.

It has been reported that the new 40GB+No-Backwards-Compatible units draw far less power (about 135 watts vs. around 200watts for the older machines).  So, if the CPU is the same, wherw are they getting the power savings?

GPU maybe?

It is today only low-mainstream tech.
7600GT with dubled pixel shaders to 24.

Today ATI makes 2600/2400 cards in 65nm and Nvidia 8600 in 80nm for PC (IIRC).

I doubt the GPU alone can make that much of a difference, probably a combination of many parts, better BD drive, absence of PS2 chip, better BT firmware, etc.... Dunno just my guess...

So you are saying the RSX is a 7600GT?

Wrong, the RSX is based on the 7800.

Quotting NVIDIA's David Kirk:
"The graphics processor in the PlayStation 3 is NVIDIA-designed and is called RSX. How does it compare next to the 7800? "The two products share the same heritage, the same technology. But RSX is faster."
