How Do You Play Ripped Movies From Ext Hd?

I'm gussing that the MPEG 4 files aren't quite right for the PS3. I've been having similar problems with movies, and haven't found which codec i need to get them working. Maybe MPEG 2 would be better, but you will probably need the right screen size, and bit rate.
