youch... so it costs roughly $810-$850 to manufacture the PS3  blink.gif

-move to 65nm
-strip out the PS2 chip and deliver BC via emulation

those two items could easily knock the price of the console down another $100-$200.

Even still the market is crying for a price cut... they'd be right back where they started with these improvements and a price cut.

it's too late to introduce proprietary AV cables and hard drive, external wi-fi adapter, and custom wireless.

While it's nice that they used generic tech it's not the most business savvy and it doesn't help consumers if the consoles high price causes it to tank and no games come out.

So we will be seeing this new 65nm PS3 in late 2008, if we're lucky.

The switch to 65nm is surely a must for xbox360 who suffers too much from overheating.

For PS3, I wonder what will be the best choice for a first (delayed) purchase...
"Old" PS3 (cell+rsx+iop+ee+gs) or...
"New" PS3 (cell+rsx) cheaper and cooler

I mean if some hack is done on the old model, from a programming point of view, I wonder if having 3 chips removed won't be a loss in possible paralellism among the chipsets...

About possible overheating issue on PS3, I haven't the feeling it happened with the same large scale as it happened (and is still happening) with xbox360. So, maybe (I may be wrong), overheating may not be an issue at all on "Old" PS3... (assuming you don't let it run without air circulating in room overnight)

I have to consider also the possible death of my old PS2... from aging... and the lesser abilities of pure software emulation...
