The thing I don't get is everyone at Microsoft, in particular that Arron Greenberg muppet is saying how great the Xbox360 is doing and how terrible the Sony PS3 is doing financially.

e.g this interview heading is on another forum just now.
QUOTE
Greenberg: PS3 is hemorrhaging at sales, Lost and Damned could've beat Killzone 2

If you do the actual math Sony are doing considerably better than the Xbox360.

For example say you took all those 391k sales to be just the Xbox360 Pro.

I know the big seller is the Arcade, but to be fair I will do the math on the more expensive Pro as its the average of the three consoles (including the more expensive Elite).

RRP £170 * 391k = £66,470,000

Whereas the PS3

RRP £300 * 276k = £82,800,000

How on earth could Microsoft be gloating over making almost £20 million less on sales?

I just know the prices for the UK, but somone in another region could do the math for their region to see who's on top of total amount earned.

I have just looked at Amazon.com, so am hoping this is the USA RRP of the two consoles.

But the PS3 is $399.99, 360 Pro is $299.99

$300 * 391k = $117 300 000

$400 * 276k = $110,400,000

So the Xbox360 has made $7 mill more this month in the US, but with Sony you also have the PS2 selling 130k, to factor into this, which on Amazon is selling at $130.

130 * 131k = $17,030,000

Of the two I know who I would rather be.

You forgot that it costs more for the PS3 to be made initially.  I don't know the exact numbers but if it costs Sony $350 to create a PS3 and they sell it for $400 than that's $50 per console that they made.  Where as the 360 is costing $100 to make and selling for $200 equaling $100 per console made.  Like I said, I don't know the numbers, for all I know the PS3 is making $100 and the 360 is making $150 per.

The PlayStation 3's initial production cost is estimated to have been US$805.85 for the 20 GB model and US$840.35 for the 60 GB model. However, they were priced at US$499 and US$599 respectively, meaning that every unit was sold at an estimated loss of $250, contributing to Sony's games division posting an operating loss of ¥232.3 billion (US$1.97 billion) in the fiscal year ending March 2007.However, market analysts Nikko Citigroup have predicted that the PlayStation 3 could be profitable by August 2008 despite the fact that a loss is made on every PlayStation 3 console sold Since the system's launch, production costs have been reduced significantly as a result of phasing out the Emotion Engine chip and falling hardware costs. The cost of manufacturing Cell microprocessors has fallen dramatically as a result of moving to the 65 nm production process, and Blu-ray diodes have become cheaper to manufacture.  As of January 2008, each unit costs around $400 to manufacture.

I didn't consider it from those terms.  sad.gif

TBH, and as many will see from my past posts, I am trying to keep a positive mental attitude as I much prefer the PS3 to the Xbox360. (To note, I own both, and a Wii which has been played about two times biggrin.gif )

So to add we could also add how much MS are losing on all the repairs of the 360's, as they have to employ a number of skilled people to repair the constant influx of consoles, and also telephone support agents (but for this they use cheap labour via Indian Call Centers).

And the cost off all those hardware parts that go into the repairs.

I still think in the grand scheme of things, and with the money they are making from PS2 sales, Sony are doing quite well, and that is not just trying to find baseless positives.

And if they can get the 45nm Cell consoles out before Christmas and drop the RRP price, they will make a killing.

Worse thing is there is rumor Nintendo are going to release an entirely 65nm machine, CPU/GPU, this summer and it is going to be entirely passively cooled.

How many people will do an Xbox360 and rebuy another Wii just to get a silent one.

I won't, I am rebuying a 45nm PS3 though when they're released.

Hey, am not sure what you meant by "passively cooled". Can you elaborate?

He means that the system would not use fans for cooling. The heatsinks would dissipate enough heat that a fan wouldn't be required. Thus, it would be almost entirely silent as there would be no fan noise.
