Filling Up An Ipod
« on: November 01, 2004, 08:41:00 PM »

I'm looking into buying an ipod but I dont really listen to that much music anymore (kind of ironic since  that used to be the only thing I did and I even played in a pretty popular local band)
but anyway.
I'm not gonna buy one if I cant even halfway fill it up so I'm trying to build my music library a little
got any suggestions for bands I should give a try?

I like alot of different stuff so I'm open toalmost anything except for country which gets all over my nerves.

I like alot of stuff like the chili peppers, bush, etc but am open to anything.

thanks guys

Here's some stuff I got on my IRiver:
311
Chevelle
Coldplay
Dave Mathews
Greenday
Hoobastank
Incubus
Linkin Park
Lost Prophets
Nirvana
R.E.M.
Snow Patrol
Sublime
UB40 wink.gif
YellowCard

Edit:
Beatles
Jemi Hendrix
Bob Marley
Hole
Jack Johnson
Pink Floyd
Pearl Jam
Smashing Pumpkins
Silver Chair
Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies

That's a few of the bands I got, I got something like 2 GBs worth of 80s too, good luck filling it up halfway. My IRiver has 20 gigz, and with 850 songs, I only used up 5 GBs.

I had the same dilemma, I wanted a new mp3 player when my 1.5GB Muvo2 broke but thought both the normal ipods were just overkill IMO. So I bought a mini iPod as they're only 4GB and look 10 times better too.

It's all very well having 15, 20, 40GB storage or whatever but I've had my my mini for 3 weeks now and there's still songs I haven't heard, and it's only 2/3 full with about 580 tracks. I rip mp3s at the hightest possible quality using RazorLame (VBR Extreme Setting). I couldn't give a shit about file size, it's quality I want.

I have over 3000 songs on my PC but that doesn't mean I have to have them on a portable storage device to take with me all the time. I just take what I know I'll listen to and wont skip over. There's an old saying - Just because you can, doesn't mean you should. I think this is quite apt for these mega sized storage devices. Just my opinion though.

Anyway, have a look in this thread I just started for some ideas...

I use my Iriver as my computer music drive, I hook it up thru the usb and play the songs on winamp, keeps my 30 gig laptop HDD uncluttered with music. I also hook it up to my car headunit, so all those songs come in handy on long trips.

Baner - I can see your point about your laptop. No use using all the space for songs. I only need a mp3 player to drown out the other people on the bus journey to work. It's amazing how irritating bus people can become when you don't have music. The same people speaking the same shit 5 days a week.

Pedro - Hey man, what type of band were you in and what instrument did you play?

QUOTE (b-gates @ Nov 19 2004, 03:51 PM)
Pedro - Hey man, what type of band were you in and what instrument did you play?

we played alot of alternative rock music
things like bush, nirvana, smashing punpkins, greenday, etc...
thats what we started out with...
but our songs were really nothing like any of those bands...
our guitarist was deeply rooting in bluegrass and play some of the craziest solos and pick faster than anyone I have ever heard, so that played alot into a music,
versus were usually composed of intricuge finger picking seading into a fast paced, ligtly destorted chorus...dont really know of any bands that we sounded like though

i played bass guitar and on occasion (in the studio) the drums

thanks for the suggestions guys, so far I've got like almost two gigs on it
heres what I've got:

bush (every album)
Red Hot Chili Peppers (all recent albums)
placebo (a couple complete albums and a few random songs)
311 (greatest hits album)
teancious d (entire album)
if I can get my hands on some soundguardan im gonna put that on there

Most bands mentioned totally suck but Id like to see a list of your favorite bands.

No need to list any song individually because if a band only has 1 good song then they suck.

Well indie music has its gems but most bands that are indie do indeed stay indie because they arent very good.

To say the bands already mentioned arent real music just because you like to be a loner inst fair.I say most of them suck because they do but you probably dont like them because they are mainstream.
Am I right?

You are right, because mainstream implies that they are sellouts and no longer care about making music, please feel free to name one quality mainstream artist. wink.gif
