I would just go with a decent Honda or Toyota. Nothing too fancy, but if you are just looking for something reliable and good mileage.

I'm kinda in the same situation as you, although it won't be for another 6-12 months before I make a purchase. I was also looking at some 1997-2000 Audi A4s that were in my price range. My dads got an A6, and he hasn't had any troubles with it and it's at 130,000 miles. They are a joy to drive too.

Toyota Corolla would be your best bet.  Or a late model Chevy/Geo Prizm.  They are the exact same cars as the Corolla, just less insulation.

My ex found an 01 Camry for under 5K. Decent shape. One door panel has the power lock/windows switch slightly pulled away from the panel. One minor but foot long scratch. (Keyed maybe) And one tiny dent. All in all a very nice little car.

Get a 96-2000 Civic Hatch... great commuter car and wicked on gas.  Plus the hatch looks good for a ten year old car.  Other choices as mentioned, late 90's Corolla, 94-01 Integra, late 90's Protoge are all choices to look at.
