First check that you actually have network connectivity.

On your computer, load a command window (Start => Run => Type "cmd" (or "command" under Windows 95/98) and press enter.

Now type:

ping <IP of X-Box>

And you should get a list of "replies".

Does this work?

Can you also post your X-Box/PC IP configurations?

(Type "ipconfig" into that command prompt window to get your computers details).

I assume you're using XBMC on the X-Box?

Look at the Xbox now and see what IP address it has. It should be something like:

192.168.1.xxx (anything but 100)

What OS are you running on your PC, and what version is it?

Check the properties of the NIC connected to the console, make sure it has the "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" service.

Goto Start => Settings => Network Connections. Right click your NIC (network interface card) on the list, select Properties. You'll see a list of the services/protocols the card has. If file sharing isn't there, use the Install button to add it.

Goto Start => Settings => Control Panel => Windows Firewall.

Select the Exceptions tab and make sure "File and Printer Sharing" is ticked.

If you can't find it on the list, then you're not using SP2. Either update or manually add these ports to the list:

TCP: 139, 445
UDP: 137, 138

The weather down here see-saws day to day at the minute, going from frigid to steaming.

The road work on the main highways seems to be never ending, though those bits that are finally done are much faster to drive through.

Don't think the actual towns have changed that much.

I just checked - that was already checked off.  I remove one use, therefore the computer is set up with one user.  No change.

When I was there the driving was very slow due to the roads.  Beautiful place.  I hope to return one day.

Checked off, as in, the exception is turned on?

This is getting annoying... At this rate it may just be easier to install TVersity (as many others have done).

In the meantime...

Instead of browsing, try manually entering in the path to your share. It's usually something like this:

smb://username:[email protected]/share/music/

Now assuming DNS is the issue, you'd want to try something like this:

smb://username:password@<computer's IP>/share/music/

(You may be able to leave the "username:password@" bit out depending on your setup).
