Run Windows Media Center On Windows Xp
« on: June 05, 2006, 03:57:00 AM »

I'm not sure if this has been posted already, my apologies if it has.
There appears to be a way to install MCE on XP, it's rather complicated and i haven't tested it myself but i thought it might be interesting to some people:

I'm running MCE in a VMWare instance on my XP box. So far, so good.

Not bad on my PC (cel 2.93ghz, 1 GB ddr), but what I ended up doing is enabling transcode's renderfarm function, where it uses a separate pc to do the encoding.  The other pc was the same pc, but outside of the VMware instance, so it had access to all my pc's resources (mem, hd, etc), not sure if it made a difference (and it makes my head hurt thinking about it smile.gif )

(I'm still not happy with the way transcode streams ripped dvd's, I have a much better way, but combining the C++ source with my C is killing me. Transcode: there's no need to recode Mpeg2 streams!)

One thing I forgot to point out is that running MCE inside of VMware allows for streaming of media (video, audio), but it does not allow for tuner cards, or any extra hardware.

VMWare im guessing is pretty much a PC emulator? (Running on a pc? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif) )

And obviously u need mce in some form installed. I have a dual boot here, but only use xp cos i didn't wanna have to install all my programs again on mce.

So if i got VMWare, i could somehow load up my MCE in another window and setup transcode?

VMware is a Virtual Machine emulator.
or as some people have started to refer to as "Parrallel Operating System"

but in essence it is a PC Emulator as you suggest.
its pretty good actualy as you can install a choice of diff OS
plus each virtual PC only has to take up a few GB of HD space.

however as mentioned the Virtual PC is not going to be able to run as fast as your host PC.

just install MCE...its only XP woth a few bolt ons.

http://www.vmware.com

Get VMWare Server, it's free.

Though I am curious how you're doing it, protovision. Do you have the media you're sharing available locally in the virtual machine? Whenever I try to stream from a network share, it never works. I can add the folder allright, but the Xbox360 won't read from it.

I used a mce converter successfully on xp and xp pro but could only connect x360 on xp pro mce. And I can't remember exactly what i did but it was so much stuffing around i was nearly ready to just go out and buy windows mce.

But it is worth it. Streaming all downloaded xvids to watch on couch in front of the tv is great.

I did some tricks that I found in this guide: http://www.x64bit.ne....php?t2318.html
which allowed me to install all of the MCE stuff on Server 2003.

BUT

XboxMCEFULL-ENU.exe seems to only want to install on XP, so I'm basically out of luck since my media is on the Server 2003 host.

I'm going to try VMWare since it was mentioned in this thread.  Hopefully that will work better.
