How Do I Make A Game Work?

There was a time when to make a game work, all you had to do was download it and burn it.
Since then, a lot has happened. I've been searching for a while and I drowned in the technical jargon. I still don't know the answer.
My question is how do I make a game work? Simple enough, right?
For the record, the game I want to play is this one:

Should it work just from burning? Do I need to patch it with something? If so, with what?

My Xbox Live recently ran out, so I'm not worried about that, but I still want to know if getting achievements in the game is safe.
And one more question (don't bother answering if it'll take too long):
What do I need to do to make playing online safe?
