3 Red Lights After Doing The X Clamp Fix
« on: May 18, 2007, 06:07:00 PM »

Is there any way to fix this?  My 360 was overheating and freezing a lot so I did the X Clamp trick but now I get the 3 red lights when starting it up.

I got it 2 days ago too...

lol... dumbass

Which method did you use?  Are you sure you're trying to fix the right error code (0102)?  Try either loosening or tightening the screws/bolts.

Okay, I just redid it and now I have only two redlights in the left quadrant.

I used the guide by 'LawDawg'

2 red lights mean the system is overheating.  Did you apply thermal compound on the chips after you clean the old one off?  If so, how did you apply them?

I put a small dab in the center of the chips (like, really really small) and put a really thin layer on the heatsinks.

Do I need more?

putting thermal compound on the heatsink is not recommended, because when you tighten the screws, the thermal position might move away from the chips.

You should just spread that thin layer on the chips themselves, clean the heatsinks real good, then connect them again.

It's also crucial that you buy the "right" parts from lowe's, if you bought the wrong machine screws or something, over tighten or didn't tight them good enough might also be a problem.
I had a tough time finding them at Lowe's, their employees keep on suggesting different kind of screws to me while I have the part numbers in my hand, pissed me off.

All of my parts are correct, I'd assume.  I'll try spreading more thermal paste today.

Is that arctic silver over the whole chip!?! I am pretty sure that is way too much. You are just supposed to put a little bit on the die where it comes into contact with the heatsink.

You arnty supposed to cover the whole chip area!

even tho you have removed some of the paste you have probably broken it to much already.

Should of read the guide better.

You need less than a grain of rice amount evenly spread to less than a milimeter thick.

Wow... you should have really read the tutorial on applying the Arctic Silver... or at least knew what you were doing.  Either way, if you get 2 red lights then that is an overheating error meaning you need to tighten the screws since the heat sinks are not making good contact with the chips.  You just have to keep trying... usually the CPU is fine... it's the GPU one that is finicky and requires more tweaking.
