http://www.anandtech...aspx?i=2424&p=9Q: How long will the batteries last before dying?A: Using voice (XBL headset) and rumble at 100% the non rechargeable AA batteries will last about 40hours. The rechargeable battery pack will last between 25 and 30 hours before requiring recharging. This life can be extended if you're not using the XBL headset or if you lower the intensity of the rumble feature (each controller has a switch to change the rumble to: "Full" "Medium" "Light" or "Off") Also controllers will automatically enter "sleep" mode after periods of inactivity.

Q: What happens when the batteries get low in the wireless Xbox360 controllers?A: When there is two hours of live left in the batteries the "Xbox Guide Button" in the center of the controller will change to alert you that the batteries are getting low (probably change from green to orange). When the battery life reaches 1/2 hour a another change will happen to the Xbox Guide Button (probably change from Orange to Red). If it continues to go unanswered a warning will pop-up on the screen and the controller's rumble function will shut off. You have the option of replacing the batteries, or you will be able to use the controller in a wired configuration. If you have the optional rechargeable battery pack then the wired configuration will charge your batteries. The top of the controller features a port that will allow you to connect a proprietary USB cable between the wireless controller and the Xbox360 console. It is unknown whether or not the port on the top of the controller will have any other functions.
