MS Product Naming
« on: May 31, 2005, 12:33:00 PM »

My girlfriend (who is in product marketing) made a great point. She is not really into video games but the X360 is pretty mainstream now even she is aware of it.

She wonders "What the hell do (MS) think they are doing naming it X360? What are they going to call the 3rd Xbox?" I hope it is not Xbox 360 2... or even worse Xbox 4 (to catch up with PS4.

This is not new to MS either... Any programmers remember the Visual Studio suite? I beleive it went from version 1 to version 6? Java does this too. MS goes back and forth from Version nth using numbers to using dates eg windows 98 to ME to XP, to who knows what... probablly Windows 2007.

If they are going to move away from numbers, they should find a related set like Apple is doing with their OS... eg Tiger, Panther, Jaguar... That actually works pretty well.

What do you think?

<sigh>...

What do you think of MS's naming methods...

I personally think the x360 is a stupid name. I would have much rather liked an Xbox2 or something else...

When I heard Xbox 360, I was imagining a round console of some sort... bleh...

Longhorn is the codename. Likely will not be the final name...

IMO I don't thing it matters, though i like the X360 name, as at least you never heard of it before. Xbox 2 or Xbox 2005 or similar will be too stereotype.

Did Nintendo name the Gamecube, "N128" ? No. So i don't think M$ is gonna have problems calling their 3rd console whatever name they choose. wink.gif

I like xbox360 much more than Xenon or Xbox2, Although I don't know what the next one will be named, xbox720 wouldn't be horrible, but I would like it if they came up with a whole new name. perhaps Xbox-Pi wink.gif and 360 was codenamed Xenon because it's the name of the 64-bit IBM chip that's inside. Naming consoles in a numerical order leads to a problem, next gen PS4 will be bland and seems very unoriginal.... Right now I'm happy with whatever it is as long as it's not Xbox3, and I think that whole naming it 360 because it's higher than ps3 is complete bs, I doubt that has an effect on anyone even casual gamers, and if it doe's the percentage is very small, deffinetely not large enough to waste naming it for that purpose. Since XBL and a strong community is the key points of the 360, the name meaning revolving around the player and such makes more sense.

I only like the new name when its actully pronounced "X360."  Xbox360 just sounds too long and gaudy for me.
