Samsung Drive Compatability Thread
« on: September 09, 2006, 12:53:00 AM »

threads on hardware / software to use for a working backup are getting out of hand and need to be centralized, please use these instead of making new threads.

There are a couple already made, but its been a while and there are newer firmwares available and now seems to be a good time to begin a new thread.

Let me start each of these thread by saying YOU CANNOT GO WRONG PURCHASING VERBATIM DVD+R DL DISCS!
they are currently the best discs available for 360 backups, flat out.

you can get them fairly cheap, sometimes as low as $1.50 a disk in packs of 10-30.

any other media you use, may work for you at first, but dont be surprised to see a dirty disc error in the future.
store brands, off brands, etc.)

anyways, lets try and keep this thread clean, stating what works in the same format.

(I am putting this in both hitatchi and samsung threads as an example, please keep it as clean as you can with what works.)

Working bakcups made with:
DVD firmware:        Xtreme firmware for TS-H943 (old release with 0800 disc)
Burner            NEC 111-D
App            Clone CD
Media             VERBATIM DVD+R DL
Method            ISO buster
Speed            2.4x and 8x both working

http://www.xbox360flasher.com/360_trials.php

has been doing what you're asking for a while already... yup.

And as for Verbatim - if you've got a pioneer - buy mom and pop DL's and your backup will run.

Media is irrelevant.

edit:

im setting some of these posts as invisible, as it got out of hand a second... anyways, this is not a flame/agrue thread, just a listing of working setups.

jester, if you got my pm, please take a quick second to put some info out on the importance of using quality media as opposed to mom and pops, just so people know that media is NOT irrelevant.

Will a Verbatim DVD-R DL work? My place is selling Verbatim DVD-R DL @US$24.8 for 10 disc in a cake box instead of US$31.80 for Verbatim DVD+R DL 10 disc. Since DVD-R DL is cheaper for me, i had bought DVD-R DL instead. Is there any special step to take for burning backup into DVD-R DL disc?

-R DL do not have the same layerbreak properties as +R DL

avoid -R DL

Couldn't this be overcome by setting a different layer break?

No that is one of the problems with D/L DVD-R as it is not nearly as flexible for such things as D/L DVD+R.  @rat poison, where exactly do you get your conclusions about media not mattering?  How many drives have you tested this theory of yours on?  How many burns have brought you to this conclusion?  How many people have you talked to that can confirm your claims?  Unless you have done alot of research into all of the above then your claims about media being irrelavent are completely unfounded.  Having a few burns (or even many burns) on one or two drives is hardly a significant test.  It is true that a number of people have had success with other media on the Samsung drive and that the Pioneer 111D is truly a marvel for it's versatility (especially with the 360) but the fact of the matter is that regardless of application Verbatim has consistantly shown to be more flexible and more durable.  Durable being the key here.  Take a look at the error rate scans done on Verbatim D/L media and compare them as a whole to other D/L media.  Nothing else comes close.  Even when I burn my 2.4x D/L Verbatims at 8x, I don't get anywhere near the number of average PIFs that folks get burning other D/L media.  Error rate scans aren't 100% but they can help you predict the longevity of your media.  In addition it helps to do scans several months down the road.  Cheap quality media might burn and scan well at first but it can often take a severe nose dive after several months.  The bottom line is that you could easily end up with a non-working disc after less than a year.  Also, which country are you located in?  If you live in the US, then honestly it is just dumb to buy anything but Verbatim as the sales on them are becoming more and more frequent and they can often be brought down to where they are actually cheaper than the cheapest POS D/L media that is out there.  Case and Point a couple of weeks ago newegg had a 20 pack of D/L Verbatims for $31 shipped (about $1.55 a disc).  On top of that they had a $10 MIR, so after rebate it works out to 20 discs for $21 shipped (about $1.05 a disc).  Even the cheap quality stuff doesn't usually get that cheap.  In other countries I understand that the difference can be quite a bit more so you will have to weigh the risks.

I have burned about 15 backups using Bulkpaq DVD+R DL (type: CMC D01). Cheap as chips but excellent quality, I have never had any coasters and no problems at all in getting them to run.
I have heard bad things abut Bulkpaq in the past but I have been using single layer Bulkpaq DVDs for years in the original xbox and they all still work perfectly.

My 360 drive is Samsung m25 ( using Xtreme 3.2 firmware)
My burner is Pioneer 111D using firmware 1.23.

One other point. I couldn’t get my 111D to even recognise Traxdata discs at all, so I’ll stay away from them in the future. I ended up selling them on ebay and got most of my money back.

Chris
