Xbox360 Elite HDMI is v1.2 not v1.3
Posted by XanTium | April 1 21:01 EST | News Category: Xbox360

Amirm, a Microsoft HD-DVD insider, posted some details on the AVS forums about the HDMI port on the upcoming Xbox360 Elite:
Quote

Xbox 360 Elite supports HDMI 1.2 profile. For audio, you can select DD, DTS (at 1.5 Mbps), and WMA-Pro (Microsoft high fidelity multi-channel codec supported in some AVRs such as Pioneer). Since it is not based on 1.3, it will not support output of DD+ or TrueHD (even if it did, mixing would have been turned off).
PCM output is available but only for 2-channels (not 5.1).
If you are keen on having 5.1 PCM output, I recommend purchasing the Toshiba A2 player which after the price drop, will be much cheaper than Elite.

Answering other questions, both Xbox 360 Elite and current Xbox 360 units will have a spring (console) update which adds support for different video levels for VGA output ("7.5 IRE vs 0"). And as someone mentioned, using this setting you should be able to use computer monitors in addition to TVs with resolutions all the way up to 1080p with high fidelity and no issues with HDCP handshaking. So for current users, I highly recommend trying this update with your VGA connection to see if it does the job for you. Note that this is a console update and will work for both games and of course, HD DVD. The HD DVD software update is separate from this (and will be available on both Xbox Live and xbox.com).

On output video format, Xbox 360 Elite will perform a handshake and select the appropriate RGB/YUV settings over HDMI. You cannot select it yourself.

Wow.

That is HORRIBLE news.

The whole point to going HDMI (besides 1080p output for HD DVD and DVD) was to get high def audio. But it won't output DD+ or TrueHD (which I find odd...) and if it sends PCM it only does 2.0 (a firmware update can fix that).

Get on the ball, guys, you are making HD DVD look bad.

Not that I really know the differences between 1.2 and 1.3...But clearly, 1.3 is higher..which means, it clearly must be better..so in conclusion; I'd like to piss and moan.

doesnt this only really affect people who wants audio through hdmi? which is even less than people who want to use hdmi in the first place. I mean i only JUST got surround, so im quite happy with optical.

@capboy, am i tripping or did those pills change colour?

Nope I changed it, if you also noticed I changed the PS3 baby pose. I will probably change the pill colors and the babies pose monthly just to keep things interesting.

This is the old one:

On another note I have a version with a gun to the babies head, but it was a bit too crude to use for a sig.

In other news, Microsoft announces the Xbox 360 "Spartan" with HDMI 1.3 and a 160 GB hard drive. The new green color will have your friends green with envy.

v_v Seriously MS, get with it.

And another Spring update? Oh boy, you guys remember what happened last year...

it really seems that this will affect ever fewer people than actually want the elite since the video aspect of HDMI is the true selling point - most people don't own receivers nor have audio set-ups in their home for true hi-def output.  and what is to be expected with this first round of HDMI-enabled 360s?

I really dont know much about hardware updating, but if it's 1.2 now, can it ever be updated to 1.3? I would like 7.1 surround sound on my 360 if i ever got it, (i have 2.1 now though)  I really don't know much about firmware updating and such, so if anyone would like to explain a little to me... you have my many thanx.

Thats what I was saying all along about The Elite, Current X360 owners must pass otherwise we're going to get ripped off big time, sine we all know the 360 will be updated again specially with the 65nm cpu for sure.

I couldn't care less about HDMI 1.3 vs 1.2. It's completely unnecessary, given that DD+ and TrueHD can be happily decoded by the player to 8 channel 192KHz/24bit uncompressed PCM, and transmitted with no loss. There's no advantage to having the receiver decode it instead (which is one reason that very few bother). Other HDMI 1.3 features are equally irrelevant, to HD consoles at least.

However, not supporting any more than two PCM channels is a big deal. Not only would it eliminate high-quality surround, it'd eliminate HDMI's cabling advantage by requiring a separate optical link too. I can't see any hardware reason for this, or software either, unless they just haven't gotten around to implementing it yet.

Does it apply to games too? That'd really suck.
