720p Vs. 1080i Display
« on: December 03, 2005, 10:44:00 AM »

Whats the difference between these 2 displays and which is better?

I heard 720p is better because its progressive ( not sure what that means though ).

What does the i stand for in 1080i?

The i stands for interlaced. It's a lot of your opinion which looks best. My cable company's hd box defaults at 1080i output, but you can change it to 720p. I believe 720p would look better for fast-moving games such as racing, but 1080i has more detail or something. I play on 1080i.

whatever the TV nativly supports, you can have a 1080i screen but send it 720p signal, its pointless because its being converted to 1080i by a shitty scaler. the person above me i hope your not plaing 1080i on anything but a CRT TV because if your using and LCD all your doing is loseing quality and capping your frame rate

yeah i have a 1080i 30" sony crt HDTV, i send it 720p as it looks much better. Apperently the 360 for 1080i just takes a 540p signal and upconverts it so you are loosing detail. and i could notice.

from teamxbox's vga cable review:

QUOTE
Curiously, the VGA cable does not unlock the 1920x1080 (1080p) resolution or any resolution near the WUXGA standard, leading us to believe that when the Xbox 360 outputs 1080i using the HD component cable, it only does the old 540p-upconvert-to-1080i trick. That has been my suspicion from the beginning and this certainly backs up my theory.

so if you have a 1080i tv then try both and compare i did and i could notice a big diffrence on 720p smile.gif

720p is saying that it is 1280x720 resolution. The P stands for progressive, therefore the picture is made line by line.

1080i is saying that it is 1920x1080 resolution. The I stands for interlaced, the picture is made up of every odd line first then every even line after.

This should help Info

The best quality is 1080i but how well the xbox360 can handle this i dont know, as sugested in the post above, the faster option will definately be 720p.

Yeah, my 360 is hooked up to an older HDTV which dosen't even support 720p sad.gif  but upstairs I have a Sharp Aquos LCD HDTV and 720p looks better on that. Still looks great on 1080i though wink.gif

my tv's resolution out puts are 540p and 1080i, i dont have a 360, but when i have my unleashX dash on my xbox the the thin lines flicker like crazy and you cant read anything in menus either, when i disable 1080i the font is like 3x bigger and the screen gets cut off.  You think 720p will work better on the 360(if i ever get one)

ignore me im high

basically ment to say if your tv is native 720p dont send it a 1080i signal, and vice versa

no reason 1080i should be scaled from 540p, 720p and 1080 both have 16:9 pixel ratio.....fractions people, you can change 1280 over 720 to 1920 over 1080, no reason component cables should have to use a 540 res

I understand not sending a 1080i signal to a 720p TV but from what I've been readind everywhere,
if you have a 1080i HDTV it is still better to set your 360 at 720p

i agree smile.gif

why? your tv is just changeing it back to 1080i, and most tvs dont have the most quality scaling chips

i think this 540->1080 rumors is bullshit

I can by looking that the 1080i signal sent from the 360 and looking at the 720p signal the 720p looks a lot nicer, plays smoother by a big fraction.

therefore the scalar in the 360 is not as good as the one in my tv. regardless if the 540->1080 is true or not. i can confirm that 720p looks a lot better on my tv...

and its not the norm with my tv. with my HDTV sat. reciever the 1080i setting looks better than teh 720p setting on it.

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) just what i see

It seems most games are being (and will continue to be) native 720p. 1080i is going to be inferior (namely because of the upsampling whether from 720p or 540p) on every game that isn't native 1080i. Kinda sucks because I have a 1080i CRT too. Zenith, your days in my bedroom are numbered smile.gif
