Does The Xbox 360 Dvd Player Upconvert
« on: November 21, 2005, 02:14:00 AM »

I was wondering if the X360 dvd player would upconvert dvd movies to 720p or 1080i? Or is this not possible at all?

well i don't know if it's actually upconverting but I have mine set to 1080i and it plays dvds at that resolution according to what my tv says so it may be upconverting.  They do look exceptionally good on the 360 so maybe.

That is probably correct, but can you provide any proof with your statement?

"Xbox 360 is the perfect centerpiece for your hi-tech living room. Watch your DVD movies in glorious 480p from the get go."

http://www.xbox.com/en-US/hardware/xbox360/morethangames.htm

Also, upconversion on any dvd player (non-hacked) is only allowed through a HDCP digital output.  ** I believe there are a few Chinese brand DVD players that allow this process. **  Unless MS wants to screw around with the MPAA, they would not allow their dvd software to upconvert through the unprotected component outs.

If or when there are digital outs on the Xbox (with HDCP), then maybe it will act as an upconverting player.  Although, I am not sure if the chip in the console is even capable of that process.

Guess i'll still be using my xbox with xbmc to watch movies in upscaled 720p.  Not a bad thing, i guess.

And on that point, i'm pretty sure the 360 is more then capable of upscaled 720p/1080i, considering that the xbox can do it without a problem.

How do you get your xbox to upconvert dvds in xbox media center?  Also, how do you even get xbox media center or evolution x to display in high def?

I have a xenium ice, bios is x2-4983.06, evox 3935, and xbox media center.  I do not have the dvd remote for the xbox (does this matter).

Well, you first have to be using an HDTV with component cables, or computer monitor with a transcoder/vga bios for the higher resolutions to be even accessable in the MS dashboard.  If you have such, then you need to enable these resolutions, or the one of your choice.

The latest xbmc builds will just defualt to the highest res you have set in your ms dashboard.

Evox does not support higher res's, but many other apps (avalaunch, unleashx, most emulators, etc.) do.  In these apps you'll need to enable high res; it does not auto detect like xbmc does.

The dvd remote has nothing to do with it.

Xbox 360 upconverts dvd movies. I have the premium and a Sony HDTV. Set the video output to 1080i, verified that the signal received by my tv was 1080i (it flashed on screen). Viewed Star Wars episode 3 and it was better than the default 480p.

I've tested this myself THE XBOX 360 DOES NOT SCALE OR UP-CONVERT DVD MOVIES...

I'll have my 360 set to output in 720p, I pop in a DVD and the resolution magically changes to 480p...

Besides the 360 is junk as a DVD player, I'd much rather use an Xbox 1 with XBMC or a stand alone progscan/upscaling player.

I agree 100%

The xbox 1's dvd playback via xbmc is far superior to the 360's dvd playback.  Far and away the most pathetic aspect of the 360.
