Guitar Hero Ii Issue

Hi all
I just purchased guitar hero II and i can't seem to get the controller to work right.  It turns on, but the controller just keeps pressing buttons on its own.  I have modded firmware and tried it on a friends box that isn't modded and it worked on his? WTF, anyone have any ideas???
