thank you for the link. I now see that many before me have come across this and the way round this is :

> bootable floppy
> mktflashvia (renamed)
> boot up and backup / flash fw


Few questions though. With the new fw being released all the time is it still required that you do all the extracting and such in dos or is there a similar process to the birdy programme?

I have the mktflashvia file but there is mention that I need the original file as well (just replace the .exe) for my drive (47d). is this correct?

I am correct in thinking that with my drive, and also this sata i stiill have to do this the hard manual way and not through any of the latest gui driven utils released?
