AACS hacked to expose Volume ID on Xbox360 HD DVD Addon

From engadget.com:
Quote

In parallel efforts, hackers in both the Xboxhacker and Doom9 forums have exposed the "Volume ID" for discs played on XBOX 360 HD DVD drives. Any inserted disc will play without first authenticating with AACS, even those with Volume IDs which have already been revoked by the AACS LA due to previous hacking efforts. Add the exposed processing keys and you can decrypt and backup your discs for playback on any device of your choosing. Now go ahead AACS LA, revoke the Toshiba-built XBOX 360 HD DVD player... we double-dog dare ya.

Nice hack but they probably should have waited till after the major HD-DVD update (as reported on the industry insiders Q&A thread on avsformus.com). It is reported to be coming out in a few weeks. There is going to be major audio, display, and error improvements.

Well if there is any added security maybe they'll be nice and only breach it in 3 days.   (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

EDIT: Seems I'm a little behind on the news, this is what they have been doing before, now it's a whole different ballgame Information below still stands for hacked firmware, only you don't need one anymore (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

You need to extract your HD-DVD drive's firmware, hexedit in the key, and flash it, same procedure as the normal DVD drive on the xbox360 with the xtreme firmwares and such.

Only problem now is, the firmware cannot be read yet, only by desoldering the chip and sticking it in a programmer can one read the firmware and extract the drivekey. You need the drivekey just like you need it on your normal drive. You can't just flash somebody else's firmware, because it has a wrong drivekey.

The guys over at doom9 and xboxhacker are working on the CDB commands to extract the firmware without desoldering the chip.

Another problem is in the checksum, the firmware is XOR-ed and SUMmed, these 2 have to match, so if you change one bit, the XOR and SUM change, for every bit you change in the firmware you have to change another somewhere else. If the checksum does not match, the firmware is rejected by the drive.
They tried to rewrite the bootloader to bypass these checks but it seems the bootloader is not flashed with the firmware so they are trying to find the command to flash the bootloader.

That's basically all I know about this, one thing I do know is that I'm gonna wait for these problems to be sorted.  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sleep.gif)

my bad silly post i wread and understand now i think.
does the drive contain 2 keys and one has to marry to the other internally on start up?

Theoretically, what will happen to all of us who own the 360 HDDDVD addon if it gets revoked by the AACS LA? Will MS have to release a revised player? Will we be able to exchange the old player for it? Will an update MS is forced to do (By AACS LA) stop ANY hddvds being played?

Fortunately, I doubt this will ever happen. It would cause for too much backlash - the 360 addon's the most popular hddvd player now I think. It's just proof that these security measures are pointless because they will never get enforced.

Yeah they already found the CDB :-)

Time to stockpile these drives before they release the 'updated' firmware!
