Dvd's Don't Play Correctly
« on: April 08, 2007, 01:54:00 PM »

I'm having a strange issue playing DVD's on my 360 console.

I have it plugged in and running in 720p (component) through an X2VGA2 to an LCD monitor.

When I start the DVD up, the light on my X2VGA2 turns red, indicating that it is now in 480p mode.

The DVD menu comes up and seems to work fine, but when I play the movie, the screen goes black and all I get is audio.

What's going on?

Does it work if you set your 360 to 480p?  Why didn't you just get the $20 vga cables?

Nope, it doesn't work if I set it to 480p. I still get black screen with no sound.

Now here's something interesting... Any DVD's of TV shows that I made with my DVD recorder seem to play just fine, but commercial DVD movies do not.

Sounds like the 360 is sending out a 480i signal which VGA transcoders cannot handle.

As recommended, why don't you get the VGA cable?

I don't think that it's outputting in 480i, because the indicator light is solid, which means 480p. If it were 480i, the light would blink. (the X2VGA2 tells you what mode it is detecting by showing different colored lights and blinking or not blinking)

And, two reasons why I don't have a normal VGA cable already:

1. I bought the X2VGA2 for my original Xbox, and it seems to work perfectly with my 360 (aside from this problem..)
2. I have heard that the Xbox 360 does not support 16:10 resolutions well, and it would be strangely distorted on my monitor, so people say.

Okay. I did a bit more testing, and all DVDs play just fine over composite to my non-HD TV.
