Convert .mkv (matroska) Files
« on: April 27, 2006, 02:24:00 PM »

Hi, I have some hidef .MKV (matroska) files and they won't play on my 360.  Does anyone know of a way I can convert these to a usable format with minimal to no quality loss?
Thanks!!

Do you have the combined community code pack installed?  Try installing the pack again if you do.

I use River Past also, its great for quality.

I haven't had a hitch with my hd files. It does take a long while though..well worth it  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

did this converstion myself only last night.

as suggested install the community codec pack to give you the ability to open .MKV within MP.
the drag the MKV into file cleaner and the jobs a goodun.

on my monster killer pc it took aprox 5 hours to convert an hour long 720p with 5.1 to WMV

the riverpast video converter works great... for mkv's 'just install community pack)

BUT

no 5.1 AUDIO support sad.gif not even with the lasted version... (or did you manage this ???)

So... I could use an mKV splitter (MP4box or something likt that to extract the audio file)...

but which programme should I use to convert the soundtrack .AC3 to 5.1 WMA ?

and which app to mux the WMV and WMA again ?

thnx !

You can use Windows Media Encoder to convert your .AC3 file to WMA PRO 5.1. Then you can use the Windows Media Stream Editor that comes with WME to combine your WMV video with the WMA audio.

In order for the conversion to work, make sure your PC is set up for 5.1 sound in the control panel. Hope this helps.

its true that a conversion can take some time...
but the alternative a ropey dodgey nasty quality transcode....
id rather set this off over night and watch it the following day.

When using river past,

my cr@ppy computer takes about 19-24 hours to convert these hd movies. High powered ones should only take about 12 hours or so..
