sorry i dont know any apparent solution for your problem.. other than DONT use the 360 for dvd-movie playback...

it just plainly suck

press the button on your tv which scrolls through the picture modes available from the tv

Try changing the normal video output (4:3) to widescreen (16:9).  Go to system/console settings/display/screen format.

Yes the 360 takes the DVD playback settings (ie type of screen used) from the system settings. So set it to 16:9 from in there (like you already shouldhave if you have a widescreen TV!)

But, from what I have noticed, the 360 doesnt send the WSS signal to the TV to force it into full screen wide mode, not for games not for movies. Even the PS2 knows how to do that, which just reminds us that MS is not a home entertainment company.

try playing the movie on the 360 through another tv to see if its the tv or the 360

Well, I figured it out.  My Sony 3LCD was set to "normal" instead of "wide."  I'd think "normal" would be whatever the signal was supposed to be, such as 16:9 when it is outputted as 16:9 but I guess not.  But, I did some image tests and "wide" mode doesn't zoom, squeeze, shrink, or lose any part of the widescreen picture.
