Hacking your Xbox and
upgrading the xbox hard drive in 100 easy steps. (About 45 minutes)
Tools needed:
Hacking the xbox:Action Replay©James Bond: Agent Under Fire© Game (Original, not ripped...It's like $12 bucks used)
007aufsavewithEvoxInstaller (found in the usual places)
Big Fonts zip (and the bert and ernie files contained therein, found in the usual places)
Signed Phoenix Bios Loader (found in the usual places)
Opening the Xbox:Screw Driver with Torx bits (#10, 15, and maybe 20)
Hard Drive replacement:A new 120 gig hard drive
(Lockable!!)Live Info
hddinfo.txt file from your evox xbox backup
eeprom.bin file from your evox xbox backup
Full version of

Use this tutorial at your own risk; you could seriously eff up your xbox!
Start out by hacking the xbox:Part 11. Turn on your computer and attach the Action Replay© dongle.
2. Copy the files found in the directory 007aufsavewithEvoxInstaller onto the Action Replay© memory card.
3. Plug the memory card into an Xbox controller.
4. Turn on your Xbox without a game inserted.
5. When the Xbox dashboard starts, copy the information from the memory card to the hard drive. If there are current James Bond saves on the hard drive, delete them and then copy the cards information.
6. After the Bond game save has been copied, take the memory card out of the controller and insert the Agent Under Fire disc into the Xbox.
7. When the game starts, select Load Game and then pick the game save off the hard drive if it doesnt auto pick for you.
8. The screen will flash black and then the glorious Evox dashboard will appear.
9. Bask in the beauty of what is now on your screen.
Part 210. Obtain the subnet from your router (usually 255.255.255.0).
11. Obtain the gateway from your router (sometimes 192.168.0.1, check to make sure)
12. Find out if your router will automatically assign an IP address (DHCP) or if the computers use a static IP.
13. Go to Settings in your Evox dashboard and enter the information obtained from the router.
14. If your router uses DHCP, then select No under the Static IP option on your Xbox. If the router uses static IPs, then select Yes under the Static IP option and change the IP option to something like 192.168.0.54 (or some number that will not conflict with a computer on your network).
(If your Xbox and computer are not connected through a router and are simply connected together with a cross over cable, set up your computer and Xbox appropriately)
Part 315. Connect to the Xbox from your computer using your favorite FTP program. The username and password should both be xbox.
16. You should see folders called CDEXYZ. As for right now we are only concerned with the C folder so double click on that.
17. In the C folder, you should see a list of files and folders. Create a new folder on the Xbox called hackbackups and copy the following files there:
a. default.xbe, xbox.xtf, Xbox Book.xtf (You may have none of these, or all of these. Dont worry if you dont have all of them, just copy which ones you do into the new folder. If you have a Fonts folder, copy that into the backups folder as well)
18. If you do not have a Fonts folder, continue onto step 5. If you do, read on
Go into you Fonts folder and Rename xbox.xtf and xboxbook.xtf files to: xbox.xft, and xboxbook.xft. (Notice the difference? You are changing the .XTF to .XFT)
19. Now, copy bert.xtf and ernie.xtf into the Xbox directory that contains the files that you just renamed. (Either in the Fonts folder or just directly into the C folder or both if the files were in both)
20. Now copy the contents of the Signed Phoenix Bios Loader folder into the C folder on your Xbox (NOT the Fonts folder
the C folder!!)
21. Now take out the Bond game and restart your Xbox. If everything went smoothly, Evox should load up
Getting the evox backup files:22. Go into the 'system utils' menu of your software hacked xbox with evox dashboard installed.
23. Navigate to the 'backup' menu option, select it.
24. 'Backingup
' will show in the screen, then it'll dump you back to the settings menu.
25. The backup files were created on your xbox hard drive in c:backup
26. Hop onto your favorite ftp program and copy the contents of the backup folder to your computer.
Opening the Xbox case:27. Turn your xbox upside down.
28. Remove the 4 pads on the 4 corners of the xbox.
29. There are 6 screws total, 4 beneath the pads, 1 beneath the silver sticker, and 1 beneath the serial number sticker. Depending on which version you have, your either need a size 15 torx or a size 20 to unscrew those screws (home depot has a nice black and decker screw driver set for 10 bucks that has 43 bits...every bit you'll ever need to do anything with your xbox...there's my plug for the day).
30. Unscrew all 6 screws and turn the xbox right side up.
31. Remove the case by lifting up on the sides...should just pop off.
32. Looking from the front of the xbox down, the hard drive is on the right, the DVD is on the left. Lift up the IDE cable going from the DVD drive to the hard drive, you should see a gold/copper screw beneath the cable, unscrew it (size 10, I think)
33. Unplug the IDE cable from the hard drive along with the power (power comes off kind of hard).
34. The power cord is woven along side the hard drive platform, unweave it and remove the hard drive and its platform (as if you had a choice of removing the platform).
34. There are 4 screws holding the hard drive onto its platform, they are on the underside, unscrew them.
36. Your xbox hard drive is free...rejoice.
Now let's work on getting that crappy 8-10 gig replaced:37. After copying the 'backup' folder that evox created onto your local hard drive, remove the xbox hard drive from the xbox.
38. Take new xbox hard drive, set it as 'slave' and put it on the primary ide cable (your computers hard drive should be set to primary master, just put the new xbox hd as primary slave and attach it to the next link on the cable).
39. Turn your computer on.
40. Load up 'Live info'. Click on the 'Load EEPROM' button at the bottom of the page.
41. Navigate to the 'eeprom.bin' file that is in the backup folder you just copied from the xbox. Open that file.
42. In the main window of 'LiveInfo', you should see a section called 'HDD Info' written in blue. Under that section, you have a drop down menu labeled 'IDE Device', select that drop down menu and select ;Physical Drive 1' (or whatever drive your xbox hd is, it is 1 if you followed the steps above).
43. The HDD Status at the bottom of the window should read "Locking: Not Locked", if it doesn't you're screwed...return your drive...if it does, continue on to step 8.
44. Find the 'Calculated Password' number. It is a very large number (i.e. 6c7s9fd13f458cb8da734dcs46ff15f696126454, or something along those lines).
45. Click and drag through that number to select it all and press 'ctrl+c' to copy the number.
46. Open a new text document and paste that number in the window.
47. Double check the number you pasted matches the number in the 'LiveInfo' window EXACTLY!!!!!!!!! Triple Check it!!!! Quadruple check it!!!
48. Print out the text document you pasted the number into.
49. Close 'LiveInfo'
50. Go into the back up folder you copied from the xbox and open up the file 'hddinfo.txt'. PRINT IT!
51. Before turning off your computer, make sure you have winhex installed...just to make things easier later (you're going to disconnect your cdrom drive(s), so if winhex is on a cd, install it now)
52. Take your new xbox hard drive off the IDE cable and replace it with the old xbox hard drive (making sure the old hd is set to 'slave' as well.)
53. Insert the unlockx boot disk into your floppy drive and start your computer.
54. Once the computer has booted off the disk and you are sitting at the 'a:' prompt, type 'unlockx' (without the quotes) and hit 'enter'
55. Select the xbox hard drive (most likely it will be #2).
56. Enter in the 'HDD Key' from the hddinfo.txt printout you made. (This key is the first 40 numbers...don't enter in all the zeros or the ':'...for example:

57. When you have finished the code double and triple check that the code is correct, if you don't and it is wrong, the rest of the tutorial might be of no use to you, if everything checks out, press enter
58. You will get a prompt of "L) to lock or U) to unlock" or something along those lines. Press 'U' without the quotes and then press enter.
59. You may get an error of 'Hard Drive will not unlock, program aborting' or something like that. If you do get this error, just type 'unlockx' again at the a: prompt without restarting you computer, and repeat steps 19-22. You may still get the error again, but that's okay, the hard drive should be unlocked.
60. If you get the message "HDD #2 is unlocked" or something along those lines, turn off your computer and eject the boot disk from the floppy drive.
61. Remove the cables from your cd rom drive(s) and attach the new xbox hard drive as secondary slave, turn your computer on.
62. When you get into windows
63. Close all windows and run the winhex program (By default the icon is in start menu -> Programs -> Winhex)
64. Click 'Tools' on the menu bar, then mouse over to 'Disk Tools' and then mouse over to and click on 'Clone disk'
65. A small window will pop up, click 'source disk' and select 'Hard disk 2' under 'Physical Disks', click ok.
66. Click 'destination disk' and select 'Hard disk 3' under 'Physical Disks', then click ok.
67. Make sure the 'Copy entire source disk' is check marked and make sure the 'Start Sector [dest disk]' text box has the number'0' typed in it without the quotes.
68. Click 'OK'
69. A couple of dialogue boxes will open, just click 'ok' or 'continue' until the process starts. It should take about 10 minutes after it gets going.
70. Once the disk copying is complete, shut down your computer.
71. Remove the new xbox hard drive from the Secondary IDE channel.
72. Insert the unlockx boot disk into your floppy drive and start your computer.
73. Once the computer has booted off the disk and you are sitting at the 'a:' prompt, type 'unlockx' (without the quotes) and hit 'enter'
74. Select the xbox hard drive (most likely it will be #2).
75. Enter in the 'HDD Key' from the hddinfo.txt printout you made. (This key is the first 40 numbers...don't enter in all the zeros or the ':'...for example:

76. When you have finished the code double and triple check that the code is correct, if you don't and it is wrong and you don't remember the code you entered, the hard drive will never work again if you continue, SO CHECK IT AGAIN!!!!!
77. Write down the number on a piece of paper as you entered it on the screen and then hit 'enter'.
78. When asked about locking or unlocking, select locking.
79. Turn off the computer.
80. Remove the old xbox hard drive and put the jumper back to where it was (either cable select or master)
81. Plug the hard drive into the xbox and turn it on. Make sure it works, then return to your computer.
82. Plug in your new xbox hard drive to IDE channel one (the one your computers hard drive is on).
83. Turn on your computer.
84. Same as before, wait till the a: prompt displays and then type 'unlockx'
85. Select the new hard drive (most likely 2) and enter in the code you printed and wrote out from the 'LiveInfo' window.
86. This is the important step...you just spent a lot of money on this hard drive so you REALLY need to make sure it is the right code...I'm talking check it 15 times if you are unsure!!! JUST MAKE SURE IT IS THE RIGHT CODE!!!!!!!!!!!
85. Check the code again
86. Hit enter and then select 'lock'
87. Turn off your computer
88. Remove your new xbox hard drive and set the jumper to whatever the old xbox hard drive was set to (master or cable select)
89. Unplug your old xbox hard drive from the xbox and plug the new one in.
90. If all worked well the hard drive should boot up with no problem!
Now you have a 120 gig hd, but what good is it if the Xbox can only see 8 gigs of it? We need to activate the F drive so you can store your homebrews on there...91. Put your computer back together and boot into Windows.
92. Using your FTP program, log into your xbox.
93. Navigate to the 'c folder' on your xbox and copy the evox.ini file to a folder on your hard drive.
94. Make a copy of THAT evox.ini file somewhere else on your hard drive (can't be in the same folder...because...you just can't do that)
95. Open a text editor and use that to open one of the evox.ini files you copied.
96. Edit the evox.ini by doing the following:

97. Copy the edited evox.ini file to the xbox 'c folder'. Replace the existing evox.ini file.
98. Go to your xbox, restart it and select 'Format F'.
99. After formatting is complete, copy the unadultered copy of the evox.ini file from your pc to your xbox, restart your xbox.
100. Enjoy your hacked xbox with 120 gig hard drive.
